AI PCs Explained: What They Actually Mean

Every new laptop seems to be marketed as an 'AI PC' now. Here's what that actually means in practice, and whether it matters for your next purchase.

The short version

An "AI PC" is a computer with a dedicated chip — called an NPU, or neural processing unit — built specifically to handle AI tasks like background blur, voice transcription, and image generation directly on the device, rather than sending that work to the cloud. It's a genuine hardware change, not just a marketing label, though how much it matters depends on what you actually use your computer for.

What an NPU actually does

Your laptop already has a CPU (general processing) and probably a GPU (graphics). An NPU is a third specialised chip, designed to run AI models efficiently using much less power than doing the same work on the CPU or GPU. Tasks like real-time noise cancellation on video calls, live captioning, and photo editing features that remove objects from images are the kinds of things NPUs are built to accelerate.

Why "on-device" matters

Running AI features locally rather than in the cloud has a few practical benefits: it works without an internet connection, it's generally faster since there's no round trip to a server, and your data — a work document being summarised, or a photo being edited — doesn't need to leave your device. This last point is increasingly a selling point for privacy-conscious buyers.

Microsoft's Copilot+ PC requirements

Microsoft created a specific certification called Copilot+ PC for Windows laptops that meet a minimum AI performance bar, measured in TOPS (trillion operations per second) — currently 40+ TOPS of NPU performance. Meeting this threshold unlocks Windows-exclusive features like improved Windows Search, real-time translation, and Recall, an on-device history feature. Laptops sold at Noel Leeming and JB Hi-Fi increasingly carry a "Copilot+ PC" sticker specifically because they meet this bar.

Which chips qualify

Several chip families now include NPUs meeting Copilot+ requirements, including Qualcomm Snapdragon X series, Intel Core Ultra (Lunar Lake and newer), and AMD Ryzen AI processors. Not every laptop with one of these chips automatically qualifies — Microsoft's certification depends on the exact chip model and TOPS rating, so it's worth checking the specific spec sheet rather than assuming any recent chip qualifies.

Does it matter for your use case

If you mainly browse, email, and stream video, the presence of an NPU won't change your day-to-day experience much yet — most everyday software hasn't been rebuilt to use it. If you do a lot of video calls, photo or video editing, or use AI writing and transcription tools regularly, an NPU-equipped machine can genuinely speed up and improve those specific tasks, and often extends battery life for AI-adjacent workloads like background blur during calls.

What it doesn't mean

An AI PC label doesn't mean the computer is smarter or faster overall — general performance still comes from the CPU and GPU as before. It also doesn't replace cloud-based AI tools like ChatGPT, which still require an internet connection and run on much larger models than any laptop chip could handle locally.

Buying advice

Treat the AI PC and Copilot+ labels as one useful spec among several, not the deciding factor. Compare it alongside battery life, screen quality, and build quality as you would any other laptop, and only weight it heavily if you specifically plan to use AI-heavy features like live transcription or on-device photo editing regularly.
