AI Upscaling in TVs Explained
Nearly every new TV now claims AI-powered picture processing. Here's what that actually does to the picture, and where the marketing gets ahead of reality.
What upscaling actually is
Most content you watch โ free-to-air TV, older streaming shows, DVDs โ isn't filmed in your TV's native resolution, which today is usually 4K (3840x2160). Upscaling is the process of taking lower-resolution source material and mathematically filling in the extra pixels needed to display it on a 4K or 8K screen. This has always happened on TVs; the "AI" part refers to a newer, smarter method of doing it.
How AI changes the process
Older upscaling used relatively simple mathematical formulas to guess what the missing pixels should look like, which often produced soft or slightly blurry results. AI upscaling instead uses a neural network trained on huge numbers of images to recognise patterns โ edges, textures, faces โ and reconstruct detail more convincingly. In practice, this generally means sharper edges, better texture in things like grass or fabric, and fewer visible artefacts compared to older upscaling methods.
What it genuinely improves
AI upscaling is most noticeable on lower-quality sources โ standard-definition free-to-air broadcasts, older DVD-quality content, or heavily compressed streaming video during a poor internet connection. On these sources, a good AI upscaler from brands like Samsung or Sony can visibly clean up noise and softness compared to a basic TV's processing.
Where the marketing gets ahead of reality
AI upscaling cannot invent detail that was never captured in the first place โ it's making an educated guess, not recovering lost information. On already high-quality 4K streaming content, the difference between a good and mediocre upscaler becomes far less noticeable, since there's little upscaling actually happening. Manufacturer marketing terms like "AI Picture Pro" or similar branded names often describe the same underlying idea with different names, and don't always indicate meaningfully different real-world results.
Which TVs handle it well
Independent testers like RTINGS consistently rate Samsung's higher-end Neo QLED range and Sony's Bravia XR range highly for upscaling performance, generally scoring better than budget-tier TVs from the same brands. LG's OLED range also performs well, particularly on its mid-to-high tier models. Budget TVs, including many entry-level models from The Warehouse and lower-tier ranges at Noel Leeming, tend to use simpler processing that shows more softness and noise on lower-quality sources.
It's not the only picture quality factor
Upscaling processing is just one part of overall picture quality. Panel type (OLED versus QLED versus standard LED), brightness, contrast ratio, and colour accuracy all matter as much or more for how good a TV looks day to day. A TV with excellent upscaling but a mediocre panel will still look worse overall than a great panel with average upscaling.
Does it matter for gaming
For gaming, be aware that heavy AI picture processing can sometimes add input lag if not specifically optimised for a low-latency gaming mode. Most current TVs from Samsung, LG, and Sony include a dedicated game mode that reduces or bypasses some of this processing to keep input lag low โ worth switching on for consoles and PCs rather than leaving standard picture processing active.
Practical buying advice
If you mostly watch high-quality 4K streaming content, weight upscaling performance less heavily in your buying decision.
