What an AI pin actually is

An AI wearable pin is a small, screen-free (or near screen-free) device clipped to your shirt or worn as a pendant. It's built around a microphone, a camera, a speaker or bone-conduction driver, and a cellular or Bluetooth connection to your phone. Instead of tapping app icons, you talk to it, and a cloud AI model answers, takes notes, translates, or snaps a photo. The pitch was always the same: less screen time, more ambient assistance.

The category kicked off with devices like the Humane AI Pin and the Rabbit R1, both launched with big promises about replacing swathes of what a smartphone does. Neither delivered on that promise, and both became case studies in what happens when hardware ships before the software is ready.

Why the first generation struggled

Three problems showed up again and again in reviews. First, latency โ€” asking a question and waiting several seconds for a cloud round-trip felt sluggish next to just picking up your phone. Second, battery life โ€” always-on microphones and cellular radios drained small batteries fast, with some units barely lasting half a day of moderate use. Third, projector and screen gimmicks โ€” the Humane Pin's laser-projected palm display looked impressive in demos but was hard to read outdoors and awkward to use while walking.

There was also a business model problem. Devices launched with monthly subscription fees on top of the hardware price, which made the value proposition harder to justify once the novelty wore off. Humane's pin, originally priced around US$699 plus a subscription, saw returns reportedly outpacing new sales within months of launch โ€” a widely cited warning sign for the category.

What's changed by 2026

The surviving and newer entrants have quietly repositioned. Instead of "replaces your phone," the pitch is now "a better microphone and camera that's always with you, tethered to your phone." Devices like Limitless and updated Rabbit hardware lean into meeting transcription, note-taking, and quick recall โ€” narrower jobs that a pin genuinely does better than fumbling for a phone.

Battery life has improved by moving more processing off-device and trimming always-on features to on-demand ones. Some devices now ship without a built-in cellular connection at all, relying entirely on your phone's data โ€” which cuts cost, weight, and one of the biggest battery drains in one move.

Are they worth buying in NZ right now

Availability in New Zealand is limited โ€” most AI pins have shipped US-first, with grey-import or direct-online-order the main way to get one here, and no local warranty support from the likes of Noel Leeming, JB Hi-Fi, or Harvey Norman. If you're tempted, treat it like an early-adopter purchase: fun to try, not a phone replacement, and budget for the ongoing subscription some models still require.
