Because no specifics have leaked yet, what a "bigger overhaul" actually involves is genuinely unclear. The most commonly floated ideas — new materials to cut down that 386g weight, a reworked ear cup fit, or a different headband mechanism — are reasonable guesses based on long-standing criticism of the current design, not anything sourced from Apple's supply chain. Treat this as informed speculation, not a leak.

A quiet chip refresh that keeps the same weight and the same 20-hour battery is a reasonable stopgap, but it's not hard to see why 9to5Mac's sourcing landed the way it did. The AirPods Max design hasn't changed since 2020, and the H2 chip alone doesn't answer the two complaints we hear most: they're heavy, and the battery life trails the competition. If a genuine redesign is coming, that's the version worth waiting for — this one reads more like Apple buying time.
