Apple Watch SE 3 vs Garmin Instinct 3: the budget-smartwatch call

You don't need to spend flagship money for a genuinely useful smartwatch. Here's how Apple's cheapest current watch stacks up against Garmin's toughest budget pick.

The short version

Apple Watch SE 3 is the more accessible entry point for iPhone owners, typically priced from around $549 NZD. Garmin Instinct 3 sits a little higher, with the AMOLED 45mm version around $947 NZD (the cheaper solar/MIP display version usually undercuts that by a couple hundred dollars). Both skip the premium materials and satellite features of their respective flagships, but keep the core health and fitness tracking that most buyers actually use day to day.

Display and everyday feel

Apple Watch SE 3 uses the same Always-On Retina display technology as Series 11, just capped at a lower peak brightness (1,000 nits vs 2,000 nits) โ€” it still looks like a proper Apple Watch and runs the full watchOS app ecosystem. Garmin Instinct 3 offers two very different display options: a rugged always-visible MIP screen with exceptional battery life, or a brighter AMOLED version that looks more like a typical smartwatch but drains faster. If screen quality and app polish matter most, SE 3 wins easily. If you want a screen you can read in direct sunlight without fighting glare, Instinct 3's MIP version is hard to beat.

Battery life

This is where Instinct 3 pulls ahead by a wide margin. Apple Watch SE 3 delivers up to 18 hours of normal use (32 hours in Low Power Mode), meaning a nightly charge is mandatory. Garmin Instinct 3's MIP version is rated for up to 28 days in smartwatch mode; even the AMOLED version typically manages 8-13 days. For anyone who resents charging a watch every single night, Instinct 3 is a genuinely different experience.

Toughness and build

Garmin Instinct 3 is built to MIL-STD-810 standards for shock, temperature and water resistance, with a chunky, unmistakably rugged design โ€” it's meant to survive being knocked around outdoors. Apple Watch SE 3 is water resistant to 50 metres and dust resistant, solid for everyday wear and swimming, but it's not marketed as a rugged tool watch and doesn't carry the same military-spec durability claims.

Health and fitness features

Garmin edges ahead on raw sports-tracking depth even at this budget tier; Apple edges ahead on how well those features are presented and how tightly they tie into the Health app you probably already check.

Neither is really "the cheap option" in absolute terms. Both sit in the middle of their respective brand's lineup rather than the true entry level โ€” Apple still sells the older Apple Watch SE at a lower price, and Garmin has cheaper Instinct 2 stock still floating around some NZ retailers. If budget is the only priority, it's worth checking those older models too before assuming SE 3 or Instinct 3 is your cheapest option.

The verdict

If you're an iPhone owner who wants a proper Apple Watch experience โ€” apps, Messages, Apple Pay, a bright familiar display โ€” without paying Series 11 or Ultra 3 money, get the Apple Watch SE 3.

If you'd rather charge your watch monthly instead of nightly, want genuine outdoor toughness, and care more about sports tracking depth than app polish โ€” get the Garmin Instinct 3, and lean toward the MIP display version specifically if battery life is your priority over screen brightness.
