3D printing has gone from hobbyist nightmare to genuinely plug-and-play in the last couple of years. Here's what's worth buying in NZ, from a $349 first printer to prosumer resin rigs.
Best overall: Bambu Lab A1
The A1 is the printer we'd point most first-time buyers towards. It's around $599 and does auto bed levelling, auto flow calibration and multi-colour printing (with the optional AMS lite unit) largely without you fiddling with settings โ a huge shift from the tinkering older FDM printers demanded. Print quality out of the box is genuinely good, and Bambu's slicer software (Bambu Studio) is far more polished than the open-source alternatives most budget brands ship with.
Best budget: Bambu Lab A1 Mini
At around $349, the A1 Mini is the cheapest sensible entry point if you just want to try 3D printing without committing serious money. Build volume is smaller (roughly 180x180x180mm) so it won't handle large single-piece prints, but for miniatures, brackets, phone stands and general hobbyist printing it's excellent value and shares the same easy setup as the full A1.
Best prosumer: Bambu Lab P1S
The P1S adds a full enclosure and active air filtration to the A1's core mechanics, which matters if you're printing ABS, ASA or other materials that release fumes and warp in open air. It's listed around $1,246 (or roughly $1,424 for the Combo with the AMS multi-colour unit bundled in). The enclosure also means more consistent results with tricky filaments and quieter high-speed printing โ worth the jump if you're printing functional parts rather than display pieces.
Best alternative: Creality K1 Max
Creality's K1 Max, around $1,399 in NZ, is the main non-Bambu option worth considering, mainly for its much larger 300x300x300mm build volume โ genuinely useful if you regularly print oversized parts like cosplay pieces or furniture brackets. It's a capable high-speed enclosed printer, though most independent comparisons still put Bambu's software and out-of-box reliability slightly ahead.
FDM vs resin: which do you actually need
Everything above is FDM (fused deposition modelling) โ it melts and extrudes plastic filament, and it's what you want for functional parts, brackets, cosplay props and anything structural. Resin printers (like Anycubic's Photon series) cure liquid resin with UV light layer by layer, producing much finer detail โ the obvious choice for miniatures, jewellery patterns and highly detailed models, but resin is messier, smellier, and needs proper ventilation and post-processing (washing and UV curing) that FDM doesn't. Most people should start with FDM; only move to resin if fine detail is specifically what you're after.
What actually matters when buying
- Auto bed levelling โ a must on any 2026 purchase; manual levelling is a dealbreaker-level hassle for beginners.
- Enclosed vs open frame โ enclosed printers handle more materials and are quieter, but cost more and are harder to access mid-print.
- Multi-colour capability (AMS-style units) โ genuinely fun but adds cost and complexity; skip it for your first printer.
- Community and firmware support โ Bambu and Creality both have large active communities in NZ and internationally, which matters when something goes wrong.
