Between hay fever season, damp NZ winters and wood-fire smoke in a lot of towns, a proper air purifier does more than most people expect. Here's what's worth buying, and what HEPA ratings actually mean.

Best overall: Dyson Purifier Cool

Dyson's Purifier Cool combines a true HEPA H13 filter with activated carbon in one unit, and doubles as a bladeless fan — genuinely useful in NZ where you want purification in winter and cooling airflow in summer from the same appliance. It's sold through Dyson NZ directly and via Noel Leeming; Dyson regularly runs seasonal promotions of up to $300 off its air treatment range, so it's worth checking Dyson's own site for current deals before buying elsewhere. Dyson's app-connected models also report real-time air quality readings (PM2.5, PM10, VOCs, NO2), which is more granular than most competitors offer.

Best value: Levoit Core 300

The Levoit Core 300 is the budget benchmark internationally, using a three-stage filter (pre-filter, true HEPA, activated carbon) suited to rooms up to roughly 20 square metres. It's imported into NZ through resellers like Ubuy rather than having a large direct NZ retail footprint, so pricing and warranty support are less straightforward than buying local — worth checking landed cost and warranty terms carefully before ordering. If you find a NZ-based Levoit reseller, it's a genuinely good unit for a bedroom or small office at a fraction of Dyson pricing.

Best mid-range: Philips Series 3000i

Philips' 3000i series (models like the AC3033 and larger AC3039 for XL rooms) purifies air with a claimed clean air delivery rate of 520 m³/h on the XL model, fast enough to noticeably clear a room within minutes rather than hours. It connects to the Philips Air+ app for real-time air quality feedback and comes internationally around AU$230-$699 depending on retailer and promotions (AUD, since NZ-specific current pricing wasn't confirmable at time of writing) — budget roughly NZD equivalent plus import/GST if ordering from an Australian retailer, or check Philips NZ directly for local stock and pricing.

What HEPA ratings actually mean

"True HEPA" or "HEPA H13" filters remove at least 99.95% of particles down to 0.3 microns — this covers pollen, dust, most mould spores and a large share of smoke particles. Cheaper purifiers sometimes list "HEPA-type" or "HEPA-style" filters, which are a step down and don't meet the same standard; if allergies or genuine air quality are your concern, stick to purifiers explicitly rated true HEPA or H13.

Room size coverage: don't undersize it

Manufacturers list a maximum room size (often based on a fairly generous number of air changes per hour), but real-world performance is better if you buy for a room noticeably larger than your actual space, or aim to run the unit on a lower, quieter setting rather than maxed out constantly. A purifier rated for a 30m² room running flat out in a 15m² bedroom will clear air faster and let you run it quieter — worth erring larger rather than exactly matching your room's square metreage.
