A standalone monitor that just displays numbers on an app is useful for diagnosis, but the real value comes from pairing it with something that can actually act on the data. Air purifiers from brands that support smart integration can ramp fan speed automatically when PM2.5 climbs, rather than running at a fixed speed regardless of conditions โ€” genuinely useful during a smoky winter evening when you don't want to babysit a purifier's settings manually. Whole-home HRV (heat/energy recovery ventilation) systems, increasingly common in newer NZ builds and popular retrofits, benefit from a CO2 and humidity monitor to confirm the system is actually doing its job of exchanging stale, humid air for fresh air, rather than just trusting the installer's promise that it's "handling it." If you're deciding between multiple monitors, check that it uses a communication protocol (Wi-Fi, Matter, or the purifier brand's own ecosystem) compatible with any purifier or HRV control system you already have or plan to buy.

Worth noting: cheaper monitors sometimes use lower-grade PM2.5 sensors that read reasonably well relatively (showing when things get worse) but aren't as accurate in absolute terms โ€” fine for spotting trends and problem rooms, less reliable if you want to compare your reading against official outdoor air quality index numbers.

Where a monitor is genuinely worth it vs unnecessary

Worth it: older, harder-to-heat homes with a history of damp or mould, households with a wood burner or open fire, anyone with respiratory conditions like asthma where knowing about smoke or humidity spikes has real practical value, and newer airtight homes where nobody's actually checked whether the ventilation system is keeping CO2 in check. Less essential: a modern, well-ventilated home with no damp history and no combustion heating โ€” you'll likely already sense stuffiness or dampness before a monitor tells you anything you don't already suspect. Either way, a monitor doesn't fix anything by itself; its value is entirely in prompting you (or your purifier/HRV system) to act on what it shows.
