Best Car Jump Starter NZ: Which to Buy
A flat battery on a wet Wellington morning is a bad time to discover your jumper cables are in the shed and there's nobody around to help. Here's what actually matters when picking a jump starter.
Lithium jump starters vs old-school jumper cables
Traditional jumper cables are cheap and they work, but they need a second running car and someone who knows which terminal is which. A lithium jump starter is a battery pack the size of a large power bank that clamps straight onto your dead battery โ no second vehicle required. For most people who drive daily and occasionally get caught out by lights left on or a battery on its last legs, a lithium unit is worth the money. If you mostly drive with a partner or in a household with two cars, cables might genuinely be enough.
The trade-off is that lithium jump starters self-discharge over months sitting in the boot, so they need an occasional top-up charge โ check yours every couple of months if it's not seen use.
Peak amps: what you actually need
Every jump starter is sold on its peak amp rating, and it's the number most people get wrong. Peak amps is the maximum burst current, not a sustained figure, and manufacturers inflate these numbers more than almost any other spec in consumer electronics.
- Small petrol four-cylinder (e.g. Yaris, Swift): 400-600A peak is genuinely enough.
- Mid-size sedan or SUV (Corolla, RAV4, Mazda 6): aim for 800-1000A peak.
- Six-cylinder, V8, or diesel ute/4WD (Hilux, Ranger, Prado): 1500-2000A peak, and check it explicitly lists diesel support โ diesel engines need more cranking current.
- Big diesel trucks or anything with a large-capacity battery: go for the highest-rated unit you can find, or stick with cables and another vehicle.
If in doubt, buy one rating bracket above what you think you need. Cold mornings and an ageing battery both eat into your safety margin.

Safety features actually worth paying for
Cheap jump starters and cheap jumper cables both carry real risk โ reverse polarity, sparking near a battery that's off-gassing hydrogen, and dead-short damage to your car's electronics are all genuine failure modes, not scaremongering.
- Reverse polarity protection: non-negotiable. It won't let current flow if you clamp the wrong terminal.
- Spark-proof clamps: reduce ignition risk when connecting near battery gases.
- Short-circuit and overcurrent protection: protects your car's ECU and the jump starter itself.
- IP-rated casing: if it's living in a ute tray or boot exposed to weather, look for at least IP54.
Other things worth checking
Look for a built-in torch (genuinely useful at night), a USB output to charge your phone while you wait for roadside assistance, and a battery percentage display so you're not guessing whether it has enough charge left. Cable length matters too โ cheap units often ship with clamps on very short leads that make it awkward to reach some engine bays.
