For most students, the decision really comes down to storage need, not chip performance - the base M4 chip is more than capable for the vast majority of coursework, so the 256GB versus 512GB question, and whether the 13 or 15-inch size suits how you work, matters more than which exact configuration to chase.
If money is tight, a well-cared-for previous-generation MacBook Air (M2 or M3) from Apple's certified refurbished store is a genuinely smart way to get the same day-to-day experience for meaningfully less, and still comes with a warranty.
Mistakes to avoid
- Buying 8GB RAM to save money. Since RAM can't be upgraded later, an 8GB Mac is the one spec compromise that will genuinely age badly over a 3-4 year degree - spend the extra for 16GB if at all possible.
- Assuming you need a MacBook Pro "to be safe." Unless your specific course requires sustained heavy compute (video rendering, ML training, CAD), the Air's fanless design and better battery life make it the better everyday student machine.
