Best Months to Buy iPhones
iPhone pricing follows one of the most rigid calendars in tech. Here is exactly what happens before and after a launch, and when the older models actually become a genuine bargain.
The September launch dictates the entire year
Apple has released new iPhones in September every year for over a decade, and that single date shapes the entire pricing calendar for the whole lineup, new and old. Once you know the launch is coming, the rest of the year's price movements become fairly predictable.
The three phases of price movement
- Phase one - immediately after launch (mid-to-late September): the new model launches at full price, and the previous generation gets an immediate, official price cut as it moves down a tier in Apple's own lineup, typically by $100-150.
- Phase two - late September through October: retailers start discounting open-box, ex-display and older-generation stock further, often 10-15% below Apple's own new lower price, to clear inventory quickly.
- Phase three - January-February clearance: post-holiday clearance tends to produce the single deepest discounts of the year on anything one or two generations old, as retailers clear remaining stock before autumn/winter demand quiets down further.
Trade-in values crash right before launch
If you are planning to trade in an old iPhone toward a new one, timing matters just as much on the sell side. Trade-in values can drop 15-25% in the single month surrounding a new launch, as everyone tries to trade in at once and the market gets flooded with the same old models. The best time to lock in a trade-in quote is late July to mid-August - a few weeks ahead of the September announcement - not the week the new phone actually launches.
Buy new-gen at launch vs buy last-gen after launch
Buy the newest iPhone at launch (September): full price, no discount, but you get whatever headline features are new that year - useful if a specific new capability actually matters to you.
Buy last year's model after launch (October onward): genuine, official price cut plus retailer discounting on top, often landing 20-30% below what that same model cost twelve months earlier - for a phone that is one generation behind, which for most people is barely noticeable day to day.
Why two-generations-back can be the sweet spot
Apple typically keeps two or three previous generations on sale at reduced official prices even after the newest model launches. The model two generations back often sees the steepest combined discount - it's had a full year of price erosion plus a fresh markdown at the most recent launch - while still running current software and getting years of updates ahead. For buyers who do not need the newest camera or chip, this is usually the best value point in the entire lineup.
NZ-specific notes
New iPhones typically become available in New Zealand the same day or within days of the US launch, through Apple directly and through One NZ, Spark, 2degrees, and retailers like JB Hi-Fi, Noel Leeming and PB Tech. NZ retail pricing on outgoing models tends to follow the same discount phases as above, though exact dollar cuts vary by retailer and stock levels - which is exactly why checking live price comparisons in October and January matters more than assuming a fixed discount.
What to actually do
If you want the newest iPhone, budget for full price at launch - discounts on it are rare and small for months. If you are happy with a one- or two-generation-old model, wait until October for the post-launch price cut, or hold out until January-February for the deepest clearance pricing of the year. If you are trading in, lock in your trade-in quote in late July/early August, before values crash around launch.
