Projectors range from pocket-sized portable units for backyard movie nights to serious laser home-theatre systems. Picking the right one depends heavily on your room's lighting and how permanent a setup you want.

Brightness matters more than resolution

For a genuinely watchable image, brightness (measured in lumens) matters more than resolution in most home setups, especially if the room isn't fully dark. A high-resolution projector with low lumens will still look washed out and flat in a room with any ambient light. If you're planning to use the projector in a living room with curtains rather than a dedicated blacked-out theatre room, prioritise a brighter unit even if it means stepping down slightly on resolution.

As a rough guide, portable battery-powered projectors are generally dimmer and best suited to dark rooms or outdoor use after sunset, while mains-powered home theatre projectors can handle more ambient light.

LED vs laser light source

LED projectors are common in budget and portable models — they're compact, run cool, and have a long-rated lamp life, but are generally dimmer than laser alternatives. Laser projectors deliver noticeably higher brightness and better colour accuracy, and dominate the premium and home-theatre-focused end of the market, but come at a real price premium. If you want a bright image in a normally-lit living room, laser is worth the extra spend; for a dark dedicated space, LED can be perfectly adequate.

Resolution and native vs supported

Check whether a projector's advertised resolution is "native" or just "supported." Native 4K or native 1080p means the actual pixel array on the imaging chip matches that resolution. Many budget projectors advertise "4K supported" while their native resolution is actually much lower (often 1080p or below), using upscaling to accept a 4K signal without truly displaying it at that detail. For a genuinely sharp image on a large screen, native resolution is what actually matters.

Casual movie nights, smaller screen size: native 1080p is generally fine and keeps cost down.
Larger screen, serious home theatre: native 4K makes a noticeable difference in detail and text sharpness.
Gaming: check input lag specs specifically, as some projectors add noticeable delay that hurts fast-paced games.

Portability and setup

Portable projectors with built-in batteries are great for flexibility — outdoor movie nights, moving between rooms, no power cable needed — but trade off brightness and sound quality for that convenience. Fixed home-theatre projectors, often ceiling-mounted, deliver a more polished permanent setup but require more planning around throw distance, screen placement and cabling.

Screen tip: A dedicated projector screen (even a basic pull-down or fixed-frame one) makes a bigger visual difference than most people expect compared to projecting onto a plain wall — it's a relatively cheap upgrade that improves brightness and colour accuracy noticeably.

Price range in NZ

Small portable LED projectors sit at the budget end, mid-range models with better brightness and native 1080p or entry 4K support cost more, and premium laser home-theatre projectors with native 4K sit well above that. Built-in smart TV platforms (Android TV, Google TV) are increasingly common across price tiers and worth checking for, since they save you plugging in a separate streaming device.
