Best Smart Thermostat NZ

Most Kiwi homes don't have central heating or ducted gas furnaces, so "smart thermostat" in NZ usually means a smart controller that bolts onto your existing heat pump. Here's what's actually worth buying.

Why NZ is different from the US thermostat market

Almost every "best smart thermostat" list you'll find online is written for American and Canadian houses with ducted forced-air furnaces and a wall thermostat wired into the HVAC system. That's not how most New Zealand homes are heated. We overwhelmingly use standalone or multi-split heat pumps (Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Fujitsu, Panasonic) controlled by their own infrared remote, plus some homes still running plug-in panel heaters or heat transfer systems. There's no thermostat wire to hijack.

The NZ equivalent of a smart thermostat is a smart IR heat pump controller — a small Wi-Fi puck that sits in the room, reads the temperature, and blasts the same infrared commands your remote would, but on a schedule or from an app. The other category worth knowing is smart plugs/panel heater timers for homes without heat pumps at all.

Sensibo Sky — the default pick for heat pumps

The Sensibo Sky is the most widely stocked smart heat pump controller in NZ, sold directly through Sensibo's own NZ store (sensibo.co.nz) and via PB Tech. It works by learning your heat pump remote's IR codes (it recognises nearly every brand sold here, including Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Panasonic and Fujitsu), then lets you set schedules, geofencing (turn off heating when you leave, on when you're 10 minutes from home), and integrates with Alexa and Google Home. PB Tech has listed it around $139–$170 NZD depending on promotions, and Sensibo's own NZ store and the Airpoints Store carry it too (Airpoints has shown it as high as $248 at RRP, so shop around — PriceMe comparisons regularly show it available for well under $170). A 2-pack is available for households controlling more than one heat pump.

The main value proposition is energy savings from scheduling: leaving a heat pump running all day "just in case" versus having it automatically switch off when nobody's home and pre-heat 20 minutes before you arrive is where the real savings show up, not from any clever temperature algorithm.

Tado and other IR controllers

Tado is better known in Europe for radiator valves, but its Smart AC Control V3+ (an IR heat pump controller similar in concept to the Sensibo) is sold through some NZ importers and third-party Amazon/AliExpress-linked listings, generally landing in the $150–$220 NZD range once shipping and duty are factored in. Unless you're already in the Tado ecosystem for other reasons, Sensibo's local stock availability and NZ-specific support make it the easier buy.

Do you need Google Nest?

Google Nest thermostats are designed for wired HVAC systems and are not a sensible purchase for a typical NZ heat pump home — there's nothing for them to wire into. Skip Nest unless you specifically have a ducted gas central heating system, which is uncommon outside a handful of older Wellington and Christchurch villas and some newer executive homes.

For homes without a heat pump: smart plugs

If you're heating with a panel heater, oil column heater or heat pump-free setup, a smart plug (TP-Link Tapo, or the NZ-common Meross and Belkin Wemo options, typically $15–$35 at PB Tech or Mighty Ape) paired with the heater's own thermostat dial gets you basic scheduling for a fraction of the price of a dedicated smart thermostat. It won't read room temperature intelligently, but it stops heaters running all night by accident.

What actually saves money

The energy saving from any of these devices comes almost entirely from not heating an empty house, not from fine-tuning target temperatures. Genesis, Contact and Mercury's own advice (echoed by EECA, the government's energy efficiency agency) is that every degree above 20°C on a heat pump adds meaningfully to running cost, and heating rooms you're not using is the single biggest waste in NZ homes. A $150 Sensibo that reliably shuts the heat pump off when the house is empty will typically pay for itself within a winter or two for a household that's forgetful about switching heaters off.
