Edge AI vs Cloud AI: What's the Difference?
Every AI feature runs somewhere โ either right there on your device, or on a remote server. Which one matters more than the marketing usually lets on.
The core difference
Edge AI runs directly on the device โ your phone, camera, or speaker โ using its own chip. Cloud AI sends data to a remote server with far more computing power, processes it there, and sends the result back. Most products people actually use today are a hybrid: quick, simple tasks handled on-device, and heavier tasks routed to the cloud.
Edge AI
Faster response since there's no round-trip to a server, works without an internet connection, and generally better for privacy since raw data (like your voice or photos) doesn't have to leave the device. The trade-off is less raw computing power, so edge models are smaller and less capable than their cloud counterparts.
Cloud AI
Access to much larger, more capable models โ this is where most advanced chatbots and image generation actually run. The trade-offs are a dependency on an internet connection, added latency, and your data being sent somewhere else, which matters if privacy is a priority.
Where you already see this in practice
Wake-word detection ("Hey Siri", "OK Google") almost always runs on-device for speed and privacy โ it would be wasteful to send audio to the cloud just to check if you said the wake word. Once triggered, the actual complex request is usually processed in the cloud. Photo organisation and face recognition increasingly run on-device too, since phone chips have gotten capable enough and it keeps your photo library private.
