What actually changed from the S25, the storage decision, and how to shop it sensibly now that it's out in New Zealand.
What changed from Galaxy S25
- Storage — the base model now starts at 256GB, with the old 128GB entry tier dropped entirely.
- Software — ships with One UI 8.5 out of the box, Samsung's latest interface refinement layered over the newest Android version.
- Chip — Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in most markets, or an Exynos 2600 variant depending on region.
- Camera and design — broadly similar hardware to the S25 generation, with a redesigned raised camera bar being the most visible external change.
This is a smaller generational jump than some previous years — if you already own an S25, there's little urgency to upgrade.
Base, Plus or Ultra?
The base Galaxy S26 covers most people's needs well at a lower price than the Plus or Ultra. Plus mainly adds a larger screen and battery without much else changing. Ultra is the one to consider if you specifically want the S Pen, the strongest zoom camera in the lineup, or the biggest battery — it carries a real price premium for those extras, so only pay for it if you'll actually use them.
Where to buy it in NZ
Galaxy S26 is stocked at Samsung's own NZ store, JB Hi-Fi, Noel Leeming, PB Tech and the major telcos on payment plans. As with most flagship phones, list pricing is close across retailers — the real savings tend to come from trade-in offers, Samsung's own pre-order bonuses (extra storage or accessories at no extra cost around launch), and retailer-specific bundle deals rather than a straight discount on the phone itself.
The bottom line
Galaxy S26 is a safe, incremental upgrade rather than a dramatic leap — worth buying if you're due an upgrade from an S23 or older, but S25 owners can comfortably skip this generation.
