GoPro vs DJI Osmo Action: Which Action Camera?

GoPro built the action camera category and still leads the mounting ecosystem, but DJI's Osmo Action range has become a genuine rival on image quality and stabilisation. Here's how to choose between them.

Stabilisation

Both brands offer excellent electronic image stabilisation on their current flagship models, generally rated among the best handheld stabilisation available in a small action camera. GoPro's HyperSmooth and DJI's RockSteady/HorizonSteady systems are both very capable, and reviewers often rate them closely, with DJI historically praised for horizon levelling that keeps footage flat even when the camera itself is tilted.

For most everyday use — biking, hiking, water sports — either brand will deliver smooth, usable footage straight out of the camera without a gimbal. The differences show up more in edge cases like very fast motion or low light.

Dual screens vs single screen

DJI's Osmo Action models have consistently featured a front-facing screen alongside the rear screen, which is genuinely useful for vlogging or framing yourself without guessing. GoPro added front screens to more of its lineup in recent generations too, but it's worth checking whether the specific GoPro model you're looking at includes one, since budget models sometimes skip it.

Battery life and low-light performance

DJI's Osmo Action range has generally had an edge in battery life in independent testing, often running noticeably longer per charge than equivalent GoPro models, particularly in colder conditions. Low-light and night video performance also tends to favour DJI's larger sensor models. GoPro remains very strong in daylight and typical action use, where the difference matters less.

Mounting ecosystem

This is GoPro's biggest structural advantage. The GoPro mount standard (the folding fingers design) is everywhere — helmets, chest harnesses, third-party accessories, car mounts — because GoPro has been the default for over a decade. DJI action cameras use their own quick-release mount system, which is well designed but has a smaller range of third-party accessories available, especially secondhand or at NZ retailers.

If you already own GoPro mounts/accessories: staying with GoPro avoids buying a new set of mounts.
If you're starting fresh: either ecosystem works, though GoPro accessories are easier to find secondhand in NZ.
Adapters: third-party adapters exist to use GoPro mounts with DJI cameras, but add bulk and another point of failure.

Note: Both brands release new models on a fairly regular cycle, and older generations often drop significantly in price once a successor launches — worth checking whether last year's model meets your needs before paying full price for the newest release.

Price in NZ

Flagship models from both brands sit in a similar price bracket, with GoPro sometimes carrying a slight premium due to brand recognition and its wider subscription/cloud backup ecosystem (GoPro's subscription also includes camera replacement cover, which factors into value if you're accident-prone). Compare current listings across NZ retailers since both brands see regular discounting outside of their launch windows.
