Does Fast Charging Cost More on Your Power Bill?

Fast chargers pull noticeably more power in the moment than a basic charger. Whether that shows up on your power bill is a different question with a genuinely small answer.

The total energy needed to fill a battery is set by the battery's capacity, not how fast you charge it โ€” fast charging finishes sooner rather than using more total electricity. There's a very small efficiency difference, and it doesn't move the needle on a home power bill.

Why charging speed and total energy use are different things

A phone battery holds a fixed amount of energy, typically measured in watt-hours โ€” for context, a modern smartphone battery holds somewhere around 15-20 watt-hours. Charging it fully, whether over 30 minutes with a 45W fast charger or 2+ hours with a basic 5W charger, requires filling that same fixed capacity. Where power bills actually move

If you're looking for genuine savings on a NZ power bill, device charging is close to the bottom of the list โ€” heating, hot water cylinders, and older appliances dominate a typical household bill by a wide margin. A fast charger on your phone or laptop is not a place worth optimising for cost; buy for charging speed and convenience without worrying about the electricity impact.
