Every earbud box claims industry-leading noise cancellation. Here's how to work out which claims actually matter for how you'll use them.

Fit matters more than the ANC spec sheet

Active noise cancellation only works well when earbuds seal properly in your ear canal. A mediocre ANC chip with a great seal will outperform a flagship chip with a poor fit. Battery life adds up differently than it looks

Manufacturers quote battery life with ANC on, which is realistic for most buyers, but check both numbers. A pair rated at 6 hours per charge with a case giving 24 hours total is fairly typical for flagship models — enough for a full working week of commuting between top-ups, but not for an entire long-haul flight without the case.

Check platform compatibility
