How to Extend Your Laptop's Battery Life

Getting more hours per charge and more years out of a laptop battery mostly comes down to a handful of habits. Here is what actually tends to help, and what is largely myth.

Software settings that make a real difference

Screen brightness is typically the single biggest drain on battery life, so dropping it a notch or two, especially indoors, often has a bigger impact than most other settings combined. Both Windows and macOS also include built-in battery saver or low power modes that throttle background activity and reduce performance slightly in exchange for meaningfully longer runtime โ€” worth enabling whenever you are away from a charger for an extended period.

Long-term battery health habits

Lithium-ion batteries, which power essentially all modern laptops, degrade gradually with every charge cycle regardless of how careful you are. That said, a few habits are generally understood to slow that degradation.

Temperature matters more than people think

Heat is one of the more significant factors in long-term battery wear. Using a laptop on a soft surface like a bed or couch can block vents and cause it to run hotter than intended, which may accelerate battery degradation over time. Where practical, using the laptop on a hard, flat surface and keeping vents clear tends to help keep temperatures โ€” and battery health โ€” in a better range.

Charging habits: what actually matters

There is a lot of conflicting advice about charging to 100% versus stopping at 80%. Many manufacturers now build battery-preserving charge limits directly into their laptops or companion software, which is generally a reasonable feature to use if available. Beyond that, avoiding letting the battery sit at very low charge for extended periods, and avoiding constant full discharges, are both commonly recommended practices โ€” though the exact impact varies by battery chemistry and model.

Note: Leaving a laptop plugged in constantly is generally fine on modern hardware, since most laptops manage charging circuitry to prevent overcharging. If you are concerned, check whether your model has a battery care or charge-limit setting in its system software.

When to stop chasing battery life and just replace it

If a battery is several years old and no longer holds a useful charge despite good habits, that is usually a sign of normal wear rather than something fixable through settings. At that point, checking whether a battery replacement is available โ€” either through the manufacturer or an authorised repairer โ€” is typically more effective than further tweaking software settings.
