How to Extend Your Router's Wi-Fi Range
Dead zones aren't all fixed the same way. Mesh, extenders and powerline adapters solve the problem differently โ and picking the wrong one wastes money. Here's how to choose.
Option 1: Wifi extenders/repeaters
A wifi extender picks up your existing router's signal and rebroadcasts it further into your home. They're the cheapest fix โ often under $100 for a basic single unit โ and need no wiring, just a power socket within range of your existing wifi. The downside: extenders typically create a second network name (unless it's a newer "seamless" model), your devices don't automatically switch to the strongest signal, and speed usually drops by close to half compared to a directly-connected device, because the extender is relaying the same data twice over the same radio band.
Best for: a single small dead zone (like a garage or one back bedroom) in an otherwise well-covered home, where you don't want to spend on a full mesh system.
Option 2: Mesh wifi systems
Mesh systems use multiple matched nodes that all share one network name and intelligently hand your device off between them as you move through the house. Because mesh nodes talk to each other over a dedicated backhaul (sometimes their own separate radio band, sometimes ethernet), you don't get the speed penalty that basic extenders have, and coverage tends to be much more even throughout a house.
Best for: multi-storey homes, houses with thick or concrete walls, or anywhere with more than one persistent dead zone.
Option 3: Powerline adapters
Powerline adapters send your network signal through your home's existing electrical wiring instead of wifi. You plug one unit into a wall socket near your router (connected via ethernet cable) and a second unit into a socket in the dead zone, which can then either plug into a device directly or broadcast its own small wifi signal. TP-Link's AV600 Powerline Adapter with AC Pass-Through Starter Kit retails around NZ$159 at Noel Leeming, and higher-spec AV1300 gigabit kits cost more.
Best for: rooms where wifi signal genuinely can't penetrate (basements, garages, sleepout buildings on the same electrical circuit) and running an ethernet cable isn't practical. The catch: performance depends heavily on your home's wiring age and quality, and powerline adapters generally shouldn't be used across separate circuit breakers or between a house and a detached sleepout on its own submeter, since the signal often won't carry reliably.
Which should you actually buy?
- One small dead zone, tight budget: A single wifi extender.
- Whole-house even coverage, multi-storey or brick/concrete construction: A 2-3 node mesh kit.
- A detached garage, sleepout or basement with poor wifi penetration but working household wiring: Powerline adapters.
