How to Livestream with a Webcam Setup
You don't need a $5,000 studio to start livestreaming well. A webcam, one light, a decent mic and free software will get you most of the way there — here's exactly what to buy and how to set it up.
Step 1: Pick your webcam
A dedicated streaming webcam beats a laptop's built-in camera in every case — better low-light performance, wider field of view, and proper autofocus. The Logitech StreamCam is built specifically for OBS and other streaming software, shooting 1080p at 60fps with a glass lens and 78-degree field of view, and is a popular starting point. If you want to go further, a mirrorless camera with an HDMI capture card (like an Elgato Cam Link) gives noticeably better image quality but adds cost and complexity — worth it only once you're streaming regularly.
Step 2: Get one proper light
Lighting matters more than most beginners expect — even a good camera looks average in bad light. A single ring light (18-inch models are common and typically run $30–$60) placed just behind your camera, angled slightly down at your face, fixes most of the problem instantly. If you want a cleaner look, two small LED panels either side of your desk (key light and fill light) avoid the flat "ring light catchlight in the eyes" look that's become an obvious streaming tell.
Step 3: Choose a microphone
Built-in laptop or webcam mics pick up room echo and background noise badly. A USB condenser or dynamic mic fixes this immediately. Budget dynamic USB mics like the Samson Q2U or Audio-Technica AT2005USB reject background noise well and typically cost $60–$100 — a big step up from any built-in mic. If your budget allows, a Blue Yeti or similar USB condenser mic gives richer sound for voice-focused streams, though it's more sensitive to room echo, so pair it with a basic acoustic setup (rugs, curtains, soft furnishings) if your room is bare.
Step 4: Set up OBS Studio
OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) is free, works on Windows and Mac, and is the standard tool for streaming to Twitch, YouTube, or recording locally. Basic setup steps:
- Download OBS Studio from obsproject.com and run through its auto-configuration wizard, which sets sensible defaults for your hardware.
- Add a "Video Capture Device" source and select your webcam.
- Add an "Audio Input Capture" source and select your USB mic — mute the "Desktop Audio" source's mic contribution if it's picking up your webcam's built-in mic too.
- Use the built-in Auto Config Wizard under Tools to set your output resolution and bitrate based on your internet upload speed — most NZ residential fibre connections handle 1080p60 streaming comfortably, but check your actual upload speed with a speed test first.
- Set up scenes (e.g. "Starting Soon," "Live," "Break") so you can switch cleanly between different layouts during a stream.
Step 5: Test your upload speed before going live
Streaming needs sustained upload bandwidth, not just download speed. Most NZ ISPs (Spark, One NZ, 2degrees) publish upload speeds separately from download on UFB fibre plans — for smooth 1080p streaming, aim for at least 5-6 Mbps of consistently available upload bandwidth, with more headroom if others in the house are also online.
A realistic starter budget
A capable first setup — Logitech StreamCam or similar webcam, one ring light, a USB dynamic mic, and free OBS software — typically lands under NZ$700 all-in when bought from NZ retailers, and covers genuinely professional-looking output for Twitch, YouTube, or work video calls alike.
