How to Set Up a Mesh Network in Your NZ Home
Mesh wifi fixes dead zones better than a single router ever will โ but NZ's fibre modems have quirks that trip people up. Here's how to do it properly the first time.
Step 1: Work out what your ISP modem is doing
Spark, One NZ and 2degrees all supply a modem/router combo with UFB fibre โ Spark's Smart Modem 2/3 or Smart Mesh, 2degrees' quickstart modems, and One NZ's equivalent. All of these broadcast their own wifi by default. If you add a mesh system on top without changing anything, you'll end up with two overlapping wifi networks fighting each other, which is the single most common cause of "my mesh isn't working properly" complaints in NZ.
You have two options: put the ISP modem into bridge mode (it stops routing and broadcasting wifi, just passes the internet connection through) and let your mesh system run the network entirely, or turn off the ISP modem's wifi radios and keep it as your router while the mesh nodes act purely as access points. For most households, bridge mode plus a proper mesh system (like Spark's own Smart Mesh, or a third-party system such as TP-Link Deco or Google Nest Wifi) gives the cleanest result.
Step 2: Check compatibility with your ISP
If you're on Spark and using Spark's own Smart Mesh hardware, setup is straightforward โ pair the mesh node to the Smart Modem via ethernet cable or the WPS button, and the Spark app walks you through it. If you're bringing your own mesh system (not Spark-branded) or you're on 2degrees or One NZ, you'll generally need to access your modem's admin settings and enable bridge mode manually โ on 2degrees this is done through their quickstart modem guides, and Spark's NETGEAR-compatible bridge setup requires setting VLAN ID to 10 with priority 0 under "Enable VLAN/Bridge Setup."
Step 3: Choose your mesh hardware
For a typical 3-4 bedroom NZ house, a 2-3 node mesh kit is usually enough. Popular options sold locally include TP-Link Deco (budget-friendly, widely stocked at Noel Leeming and PB Tech), Google Nest Wifi, and Spark's own Smart Mesh for Spark customers who want the simplest setup path. If your home has thick concrete or brick walls (common in older Wellington and Dunedin villas), lean toward a 3-node kit rather than 2, since mesh signal degrades noticeably through masonry.
Step 4: Place your nodes correctly
- Node 1 connects via ethernet to your modem/ONT โ this is your primary node and should sit near the fibre entry point.
- Additional nodes should be placed roughly halfway between the primary node and the dead zone you're trying to fix โ not right at the edge of the dead zone, since each node needs a strong signal from its neighbour to relay properly.
- Keep nodes off the floor and away from metal appliances, fish tanks, and thick walls where possible. Elevated, open placement (a shelf or side table) beats a cabinet every time.
- As a rule of thumb, if your existing wifi drops below 2 bars in a room, that's roughly where your next node needs to sit โ not further away.
Step 5: Set one wifi name across the whole house
Use a single SSID (network name) and password across all nodes rather than separate names per node. This lets your phone and laptop roam seamlessly between nodes as you move through the house instead of manually reconnecting. Nearly every mesh system sold in NZ does this by default during setup โ just don't rename individual nodes differently.
Step 6: Test and fine-tune
Once set up, walk through your home with your phone open on a speed test app and check signal strength room by room. If one area is still weak, that's usually a sign you need to reposition a node closer to that space rather than add another one. Most mesh apps (Spark app, Deco app, Google Home app) show a live map of node signal strength, which makes this much easier than guessing.
