What the Roborock Saros Z70 actually is
The Saros Z70 is a robot vacuum and mop with a small foldable five-axis "OmniGrip" mechanical arm built into the top of the unit. When it's not in use, the arm folds flush into the robot's body โ Roborock calls this "FlexiArm Riser" tech โ so the vacuum can still slide under low furniture like a normal robot vacuum. The arm only extends when the robot's cameras and AI detect a specific type of object blocking its path.
It's on sale in New Zealand at around NZ$4,299 through Roborock's official NZ store, with retailers including Heathcotes and Harvey Norman also listing it.
What the arm can actually pick up
This is the key nuance the marketing glosses over: the arm is designed to clear small, specific obstacles โ think a dropped sock, a tissue, or a light shoe โ out of its own cleaning path, not to tidy your living room generally. Roborock's own materials focus the demo on lightweight, flat-ish items under roughly 300 grams. It uses AI object recognition to identify what it can safely grip, and it will simply route around anything it doesn't recognise or that's too heavy, oddly shaped, or fragile.
It's not going to pick up a game controller and put it back on the coffee table, sort children's toys into a box, or handle anything electronic, liquid-filled, or breakable. Think of it as "obstacle clearance for the robot's own benefit," not general-purpose robotic tidying.
Why it exists
Robot vacuums have always struggled with clutter โ a single sock or charging cable can stop a cleaning run entirely or get tangled in the brush. The arm is Roborock's answer to that specific failure mode: rather than getting stuck or skipping a room, the robot can nudge the offending item aside and keep cleaning. It's a practical engineering fix aimed at cleaning reliability, dressed up in "humanoid robot" marketing language because that sells better in 2026 than "improved obstacle handling."
Is it worth the price premium in NZ?
At roughly $4,299, the Saros Z70 costs significantly more than Roborock's non-arm flagship models, which typically sit in the $1,500โ$2,500 range in NZ for similarly strong suction, mapping, and auto-empty dock features. Unless floor clutter (kids' toys, pet toys, stray socks) is a genuine daily problem in your house, that price gap buys you a party trick more than a meaningfully better clean. For most households, a well-reviewed non-arm robot vacuum with strong LiDAR navigation and a self-emptying dock will deliver a better result per dollar.
What to watch next
Expect competitors โ Ecovacs and Dreame both have R&D programmes in this space โ to release their own arm-equipped models through 2026 and 2027, likely narrowing the price gap. As the tech matures, expect the grip range (weight, shape, material) to expand, which is the metric that will actually determine whether this becomes a mainstream feature rather than a $4,000+ novelty.
