JB Hi-Fi Perks, myNoelLeeming and PB Insider: Are They Worth It?
All three big NZ electronics retailers now run a free loyalty scheme. None of them will beat a genuinely cheaper price somewhere else, but each does something slightly different — and one is far more useful than the others if you belong to the right group.
What each programme actually offers
JB Hi-Fi Perks
JB Hi-Fi's loyalty scheme is a free sign-up that gives members access to member-only coupons, targeted discounts and early notice of upcoming sales, plus a running purchase history you can refer back to. It's a relatively recent addition compared with the other two retailers, and its main value is the coupon flow rather than an ongoing points balance — worth a five-minute sign-up if you shop there more than once or twice a year, but not something to go out of your way for.
myNoelLeeming (myNL)
Noel Leeming's myNL programme gives new members a $10 voucher usable on a purchase over $100, either online or in-store, plus early access to new product launches, member-only offers and event invites, a birthday voucher, and a saved purchase history for warranty and returns purposes. Of the three, this is the one with the clearest, most immediate sign-up incentive attached.
PB Insider
PB Tech's free loyalty programme, PB Insider, is mostly a delivery mechanism for promo codes — expect a rotating handful of active codes, commonly around 10% off categories or storewide, at any given time. PB Tech also runs a separate "Membership Key" system, unrelated to PB Insider, that gives automatic VIP pricing to people who belong to a participating workplace, club or organisation and link that group's key to their account. If your employer or club has one set up, it's usually worth more than the general loyalty programme.
What loyalty programmes don't do
None of these three schemes are price-match guarantees, and none of them promise you're getting the lowest price in the market — they're a layer on top of whatever the retailer's regular price happens to be that day. A member-only coupon at one store can still leave you paying more than the non-discounted price at a competitor. The coupon or voucher is only worth something once you've confirmed the underlying price is competitive in the first place.
Is signing up actually worth it
All three programmes are free, ask for only basic contact details, and take a couple of minutes to join, so there's little downside beyond the marketing emails that come with it. myNL's upfront $10 voucher is the most concrete immediate value. JB Hi-Fi Perks and PB Insider are better thought of as a way to occasionally catch a coupon you'd otherwise miss, rather than a scheme that reliably lowers your total spend. If you buy electronics from any of these three more than once a year, signing up costs nothing and occasionally pays off — the main thing to watch is whether the "member price" you're being shown is actually better than what's available elsewhere.
Getting the most out of them
- Sign up before a big purchase, not after — vouchers and welcome offers like myNL's $10 credit are usually only valid going forward.
- Check whether your workplace, university or club has a PB Tech Membership Key set up before assuming PB Insider's general codes are the best available discount.
- Use a separate email folder or filter for retailer loyalty emails so the genuinely useful coupons don't get lost in general marketing noise.
- Don't let a loyalty coupon anchor your sense of a "good deal" — compare the discounted price against the other two retailers' regular price before buying.
Used this way, loyalty programmes are a low-effort, no-cost way to occasionally shave a bit off a purchase you were going to make anyway. They're just not a substitute for checking who actually has the lowest price before you commit to a retailer.
