The smart home's biggest annoyance has always been brand lock-in. Matter is the industry's attempt to actually fix that — here's what it does and doesn't guarantee.

The problem Matter is solving

Smart home devices have traditionally required their own app, their own hub, and often only worked properly within their own ecosystem. Matter is a shared connectivity standard — backed jointly by Amazon, Apple, Google, Samsung and others through the Connectivity Standards Alliance — that lets certified devices work across Google Home, Apple Home, Amazon Alexa and SmartThings without needing separate apps for each.

What Matter actually gives you

• Cross-platform control: a Matter-certified light bulb or plug can be added to whichever smart home app you already use, rather than being locked to the manufacturer's own app.
• Local control option: Matter supports local network communication, so core functions like turning a light on or off don't necessarily depend on the cloud being up.
• Thread support: Matter often runs over Thread, a low-power mesh networking protocol — some devices need a Thread border router (often built into modern smart speakers or hubs) to join the mesh.

Should it affect what you buy?

If you're starting a smart home from scratch, or already have devices split across ecosystems, prioritising Matter-certified products is a sensible way to avoid getting locked in again. If your current setup already works well within one ecosystem, there's no urgency to replace working devices just for the badge.
