Matter and Thread Explained

Two acronyms decide whether your next smart bulb, lock or sensor will actually talk to the rest of your house. Here's what each one does, how they fit together, and what to check before you buy.

Why this matters for buying: A "Matter" logo on a box tells you the device speaks a common language across Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Samsung SmartThings. A "Thread" logo tells you something different โ€” how the device physically connects. Confusing the two leads to buying the wrong hub, or no hub at all when you needed one.

Matter is the language, not the wire

Matter is an application-layer standard built by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (the same group that runs Zigbee). It defines how a device describes itself, receives commands, reports its status, and proves it's a legitimate device rather than something spoofed on your network. A Matter-certified light switch behaves the same way whether you're controlling it from an iPhone, a Google Nest speaker, or an Alexa app โ€” because all three are speaking Matter to the device, not a proprietary format.

As of mid-2026 the spec is up to Matter 1.6, and the Connectivity Standards Alliance lists well over 700 certified products globally. That's still a fraction of everything on the market, so "Matter compatible" needs checking per device โ€” it isn't universal yet.

Thread is the wire, and it isn't your Wi-Fi

Thread is a low-power mesh network that runs on the same 802.15.4 radio hardware as Zigbee, but uses IPv6 so devices can talk directly to the internet without a proprietary bridge. The practical upshot: Thread devices don't touch your Wi-Fi router's bandwidth, and because it's a mesh, every mains-powered Thread device (a smart plug, a downlight) helps relay signal for battery devices further from your router.

This is why a Thread door sensor can run two years on a coin cell where the same sensor on Wi-Fi might last six weeks โ€” Wi-Fi radios are power-hungry; Thread's aren't.

So how do they relate?

Matter devices can run over three different transports: Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Thread. A Matter device is not automatically a Thread device. A Govee Wi-Fi plug can be "Matter over Wi-Fi." An Aqara door sensor can be "Matter over Thread." Both show a Matter logo; only one benefits from Thread's mesh and battery life.

To use Thread devices you need a Thread Border Router somewhere on your network โ€” a bridge between the Thread mesh and your normal IP network. You often already own one without realising it: recent Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini units, Google Nest Hub (2nd gen) and Nest WiFi Pro, and Amazon Echo (4th gen) and up all include a built-in Thread border router. If you don't have any of those, dedicated hubs like the Aqara Hub M2 (around NZ$84โ€“120 depending on retailer) or Eero Wi-Fi 6E units add one.

What to actually check before buying in NZ

Three questions cut through the marketing: does the device carry the Matter logo (cross-platform command support), does it use Thread or Wi-Fi as its radio (battery life and mesh), and do you already own a Thread border router (recent Apple TV, HomePod mini, Nest Hub 2nd-gen, or a compatible Eero/Google Wi-Fi Pro router). If you're starting from zero and buying several battery sensors, a cheap Thread border router or a hub like Aqara's M2 pays for itself in battery replacements alone.
