Mesh Wi-Fi vs Range Extenders
Both promise to fix Wi-Fi dead zones, but they solve the problem very differently โ and one of them tends to disappoint once you actually live with it.
How a range extender works
A traditional Wi-Fi extender picks up your existing signal and rebroadcasts it, usually on a separate network name you have to manually switch to as you move through the house. Because it's relaying a single wireless hop, throughput to devices connected through it is often roughly halved compared to being on the main router directly.
How mesh Wi-Fi is different
A mesh system uses multiple matched nodes that share one network name across the whole home, with devices automatically roaming to whichever node has the strongest signal โ no manual switching. Better mesh systems use a dedicated wireless (or wired) backhaul channel between nodes specifically so relaying traffic doesn't eat into the bandwidth available to your devices.
Which one should you buy?
- Choose an extender if: you have one specific dead zone (a garage, a back bedroom) and otherwise good coverage โ it's the cheaper fix for a narrow problem.
- Choose mesh if: you have a larger or multi-storey home, consistent complaints about Wi-Fi dropping as people move around, or you're setting up Wi-Fi for a home from scratch โ it's worth the extra cost for coverage that actually behaves consistently.
