Meta Ray-Ban Display Gen 2 / Hypernova Rumours: What's Next for Meta's AR Glasses
Meta's $799 Ray-Ban Display glasses — the ones with an actual screen in the lens, built under the codename Hypernova (also called Celeste) — only just started shipping. Even so, early chatter about a successor is already circulating. Here's what's real and what's guesswork, and how this line differs from the cheaper, screenless Gen 3 Ray-Bans.
What's confirmed
The current Meta Ray-Ban Display launched at $799 with a monocular waveguide display.
Meta officially shipped this device — built under the internal codename Hypernova and reportedly marketed at times as "Celeste" during development — with a single in-lens display offering roughly a 600x600 pixel resolution and a 20-degree field of view, paired with the EMG Neural Band wristband for gesture control. This is a separate, pricier product line from Meta's screenless Ray-Ban glasses (Gen 2, and the rumoured Gen 3).
Because this product only recently rolled out, Meta has said nothing official yet about a follow-up. Everything below is early-stage leak territory, and we're being extra cautious about how confidently we state any of it.
What's reported (analyst / supply-chain sourced)
A binocular successor — display in both lenses — is reportedly being considered for around 2027.
UploadVR has reported Meta is developing a follow-up, sometimes referred to informally as "Hypernova 2," that would add a second in-lens display rather than the single-eye setup on the current model. Some coverage suggests this could potentially move up from a 2027 target, but nothing is locked in.
Meta's own CTO has publicly floated the size-versus-display tradeoff.
Andrew Bosworth reportedly polled followers on Instagram asking whether they'd prefer a smaller, lighter frame or a second display (with the added cost and weight that implies) — a sign the binocular decision genuinely hasn't been finalised internally, rather than being a done deal being teased.
Meta reportedly built the current Display glasses as a limited, expectations-managed run.
Road to VR has reported that a "respected analyst" expects the current $799 Display glasses to sell in relatively modest volumes, framing them as an early-adopter product rather than a mass-market push — which is part of why a more ambitious, higher-volume successor is plausible down the line.
Twisti's opinion
Treat "Hypernova 2" as a direction, not a spec sheet.
Unlike the screenless Gen 3 Ray-Bans, where leaked renders and named battery figures are already circulating, the display-glasses successor is still at the "internal poll about tradeoffs" stage. That's normal for a product this new — the current Display glasses have barely reached buyers — but it also means anyone quoting firm 2027 specs right now is getting ahead of what's actually been reported.
