Mini LED was the industrys answer to OLEDs best party trick - deep, even blacks - without giving up the brightness that LCD panels are good at. In 2026 the gap between the two has genuinely narrowed, but they still land in different living rooms for different reasons. Here is how they actually compare once the marketing language is stripped away.
How they actually work
Mini LED: the same LCD idea, just with way more backlight zones
Mini LED is not a new panel type - it is a much more refined backlight for a standard LCD screen. Instead of a few dozen large LED zones sitting behind the panel, a Mini LED backlight packs in hundreds or even thousands of much smaller LEDs, grouped into local dimming zones that can each be brightened or dimmed independently. More zones means finer control over which parts of the screen go dark and which stay bright, which is how Mini LED closes a huge chunk of the contrast gap it used to have against OLED. The honest summary: Mini LED has closed the brightness-and-blooming gap enough that it is no longer the compromise choice it was a few years ago, but it still has not solved zone-based blooming, and OLED still has not solved sustained peak brightness. Pick based on which flaw you are less likely to notice in your actual room, not which spec sheet number is bigger.
