Price Match Guarantees at JB Hi-Fi, Noel Leeming and PB Tech
All three big NZ electronics retailers advertise a price match promise. None of them work quite the way the in-store signage implies, and one of them is currently before the courts over exactly that gap. Here's what each policy actually covers.
The shared rulebook
Before comparing the three, it helps to know the conditions almost every NZ price match policy shares, because these are what trip people up in-store far more often than the headline promise does.
- Identical stock only: same brand, model and often colour, and the competitor has to have it physically in stock right now - not backordered, not "usually in stock."
- NZ retailers only: a lower price on an Australian or US site doesn't count, and grey-import or direct-import listings are excluded even if they're technically cheaper.
- Proof required: a screenshot, live webpage, or in-store quote the retailer can verify on the spot - a forum post or a price you remember isn't enough.
- Clearance and bundle deals excluded: if the competitor's price includes a bonus item, cashback, or is a run-out clearance, it's usually off the table.
- Match, not beat: all three will match the lower price, not undercut it further, unlike some overseas "beat it by X%" guarantees.
How each retailer's policy actually works
JB Hi-Fi
JB Hi-Fi calls it a "JB Deal" - staff can match an identically stocked competitor product on the spot, and online comparisons must include delivery cost in the total. Exclusions cover duty-free sales, cashback and store-credit offers, bundled or coupon promotions, grey-import stock, refurbished items, commercial orders, and competitor pricing errors or clearance lines with limited quantities.
Noel Leeming
Branded as the "Price Promise," you present a qualifying competitor price in-store or via online chat and staff verify it before applying a matching discount code. The comparison retailer must be NZ-based, and some categories require the competitor to have both a physical and an online store. In practice, this is the policy that has drawn the most scrutiny - see below.
PB Tech
PB Tech's Price Match Request requires the competitor item to be brand new, physically in stock in New Zealand (not drop-shipped from a distributor), and identical down to model and colour. Requests can be made in-store or online, but online orders need the match request submitted within 24 hours of purchase. Every request is discretionary - PB Tech can decline it even if it technically meets the listed criteria, and auction-site prices are never eligible.
Why Noel Leeming's Price Promise ended up in court
In July 2025 the Commerce Commission filed criminal charges against Noel Leeming in the Auckland District Court, alleging breaches of the Fair Trading Act connected to how its Price Promise was advertised and applied. The Commission's concern was that the policy carried enough hidden limitations and conditions that customers who reasonably believed they qualified were, in practice, regularly turned down. It's a useful reminder that a "we'll match any price" banner is marketing copy first and a binding guarantee second - the exclusions in the fine print are where these policies are actually decided.
How to actually get a match approved
- Check the competitor item is showing as in stock, not just listed, at the moment you make the request.
- Screenshot the full page - price, stock status, and delivery cost if it's an online comparison - before you go in.
- Ask in-store rather than relying on online chat if the item is time-sensitive; verification is usually faster face to face.
- Don't lead with a clearance, bundle, or cashback-inclusive price - all three retailers exclude these, and it burns goodwill for no result.
- If it's declined, compare the live price across retailers yourself rather than relying on any one store's internal check.
That last point is really the honest takeaway. A price match policy only ever compares you against one competitor, verified by the retailer you're standing in. Checking live prices across JB Hi-Fi, Noel Leeming and PB Tech yourself before you ever ask for a match tells you the real floor price - no discount code, no staff discretion, no fine print required.
