Separate from the main PlayStation 6 console, Sony is reportedly building a dedicated handheld under the internal codename Project Canis — and the leaked hardware specs suggest it's aiming well above the Nintendo Switch 2.

Bloomberg first reported in 2024 that Sony was exploring a standalone gaming handheld internally referred to as "Project Canis," separate from its main next-generation console project. Sony has not officially confirmed the device, its name, specs, price, or a release date.

TechPP and Wccftech report Project Canis is expected to use AMD Zen 6 CPU cores paired with an RDNA 5 GPU, built as a monolithic APU on TSMC's 3nm process at roughly 135mm².
Sportskeeda's leaks mastersheet cites 24GB of LPDDR5X memory and a 1080p display, with dedicated AI upscaling hardware (dubbed PSSR 3, reportedly based on AMD's FSR 5) used to hit higher effective resolutions.
Leaked AMD documentation cited by TechPP indicates native PS4 and PS5 backward compatibility, made straightforward by Canis sharing the same Zen 6 / RDNA 5 architecture as the main PS6 console.
A bill-of-materials analysis attributed to leaker Moore's Law Is Dead places likely retail pricing between US$399 and US$499, with Sony reportedly targeting price parity with the Nintendo Switch 2's US$449.99. Manufacturing is said to be targeted for mid-2027, with a launch window of late 2027 to early 2028.

Don't confuse this with the main PS6 console rumours — Project Canis is its own device on its own timeline, and a 2027/2028 launch window means genuinely nothing is locked in yet. The Zen 6/RDNA 5 spec sheet is more powerful than we'd have expected Sony to attempt in a handheld form factor, which makes us slightly skeptical it survives to launch unchanged — thermal and battery constraints have a habit of trimming ambitious handheld specs late in development.
