RGB Mini-LED TVs Explained: The 2026 Shift Nobody's Talking About
Four different TV brands quietly launched the same new backlight technology at CES 2026, under four different marketing names. If the term "RGB Mini-LED" has shown up on a spec sheet you're looking at and you're not sure what it actually changes, here's the plain-English version.

How it works
Every Mini-LED TV before 2026 used thousands of tiny blue LEDs behind the LCD panel, grouped into local-dimming zones, with a quantum-dot film sitting between the LEDs and the panel converting some of that blue light into red and green. RGB Mini-LED skips the conversion step entirely โ it uses separate red, green and blue LEDs driven independently as the backlight itself.
It's still fundamentally an LCD technology. The panel still relies on local-dimming zones rather than the true per-pixel control that defines OLED, so it isn't a replacement for OLED's contrast โ it's a different attempt to close the gap from the LCD side.
How it differs from regular Mini-LED and OLED
Key difference
Removing the quantum-dot conversion film is what unlocks the biggest practical gain: wider colour volume and brighter, cleaner highlights, without the burn-in risk that still shapes how people think about OLED. Industry coverage describes RGB Mini-LED as the first backlight technology able to match OLED's colour volume while doubling its peak brightness in the best implementations.
Compared with regular Mini-LED, expect noticeably richer colour in bright, saturated scenes and higher peak brightness figures โ Sony's Bravia 9 II, for example, is rated at 4,000 nits with VESA DisplayHDR 4000 certification, a level regular Mini-LED sets rarely approach. Compared with OLED, you still get the local-dimming halo effect around bright objects on dark backgrounds that blooming-prone LCD tech has always had, just reduced.
Which brands are shipping it

Four major brands launched RGB Mini-LED products at CES 2026, each under its own name: Samsung calls its version Micro RGB, Sony calls its True RGB, and Hisense and TCL both ship it as RGB Mini-LED or RGB-branded variants within their existing Mini-LED ranges.
Hisense is using RGB Mini-LED as a symbolic flagship technology for its most premium, largest-screen models, while keeping QD Mini LED as its volume seller โ the new UR9 and UR8 Series expand RGB Mini-LED into a slightly more accessible tier for the first time. TCL, by contrast, is keeping SQD Mini LED as its primary flagship technology and treating RGB Mini-LED as an optional complement rather than a full lineup replacement, according to coverage from What Hi-Fi?.

This is the most genuinely interesting TV backlight shift since Mini-LED itself arrived, but it's launching at flagship prices that put it out of reach for most NZ households this year โ Samsung's 115-inch Micro RGB flagship runs to nearly NZ$43,000. Treat 2026 as the technology's proving year: if RGB Mini-LED performs as well in the real world as the specs suggest, expect it to trickle down into mid-range Neo QLED and QD Mini LED sets by 2027-2028, the same way regular Mini-LED did after its own flagship-only debut.
