iRobot's Roomba practically invented the category, while Eufy (by Anker) has built a strong reputation for cheaper robot vacuums that still perform well. Here's how they actually compare for Kiwi homes.

Navigation and mapping

This is where the two brands genuinely differ. Higher-end Roomba models use advanced camera and lidar-based mapping (branded as vSLAM or similar depending on generation) with smart room recognition, no-go zones, and multi-floor mapping memory. Eufy's mapping tech has improved a lot over recent generations, and its higher-tier models now offer comparable lidar navigation, but budget Eufy models still rely on simpler bump-and-navigate or basic gyroscope-based patterns.

If you have a complex floor plan with lots of furniture, rugs, and multiple rooms, it's worth paying attention to which specific model's navigation tech you're getting rather than assuming brand name alone tells you enough — both companies sell a wide spread from basic to premium.

Self-emptying docks

Both brands offer self-emptying base station options at the premium end of their ranges, which empty the robot's bin into a larger bag automatically and cut down on manual maintenance considerably. These docks add a meaningful amount to the price, so check whether it's included or a separate accessory before comparing prices across retailers.

Suction and cleaning performance

Suction power specs (measured in Pa) aren't always directly comparable across brands due to different testing methods, but real-world reviews generally rate premium Roomba and premium Eufy models similarly on carpet and hard floor performance. Where Roomba often has an edge is in combination mopping-and-vacuuming systems on its higher-end range, with more sophisticated mop lifting when it detects carpet.

iRobot's app is generally considered more polished and mature, with detailed cleaning history, smart scheduling and integration with major smart home platforms. Eufy's app has improved significantly but has previously faced privacy scrutiny over cloud data handling, which the company says it has addressed — worth a quick check of current privacy policy if that matters to you before buying.

Eufy has historically positioned itself as the value option, often undercutting equivalent-spec Roomba models by a noticeable margin, particularly at the entry and mid tiers. Roomba tends to command a premium, especially for its combo vacuum-mop flagship models. Prices across both brands fluctuate with sales events throughout the year, so it's worth comparing current listings rather than relying on RRP.
