We're comparing Samsung's Galaxy S26 line (from around $1,499 for the base model up to $2,649-plus for the S26 Ultra) against Google's Pixel 10 line (Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL, generally priced a notch below Samsung's equivalent tier). Both run Android, both get Gemini AI baked in, and both are made by companies who genuinely want you to think their version of Android is the real one. Here's where they actually differ.

Camera

Pixel's computational photography is still the benchmark

Pixel 10 Pro pairs a 50MP main sensor with a 48MP 5x periscope telephoto and a 48MP ultrawide, and the processing behind it - Zoom Enhance, Pixel Shift, Google's HDR pipeline - is still the most consistent point-and-shoot experience on Android. Samsung's S26 Ultra has slightly more raw hardware flexibility (more shooting modes, more manual control if you want to dig into Pro mode) and matches Google on zoom range, but its out-of-camera JPEGs still lean toward oversaturated and oversharpened by default. If you want a phone that makes good decisions for you without touching a setting, Pixel remains the easier recommendation. If you want to actually tweak white balance, exposure, and shoot RAW regularly, Samsung's camera app gives you more to work with.

Software and update longevity

Pixel is first, Samsung is close behind

Pixel phones get Android's new version on day one, every year, because Google makes Android - there's no translation layer or OEM delay. Google now commits to 7 years of OS updates and security patches on Pixel 10, matching Samsung's own recently-extended 7-year policy on the S26 series. The practical difference now is less about how long you're supported and more about how clean the experience is: Pixel's software is close to stock Android with tasteful additions, while Samsung's One UI is heavily skinned, with a lot of duplicate apps (Samsung Internet vs Chrome, Samsung Notes vs Google Keep, Bixby vs Google Assistant) that a lot of owners spend their first week disabling.

Samsung has built out a genuinely comprehensive hardware ecosystem - Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Buds, Galaxy Tab, and SmartThings for home automation, plus solid Windows cross-device features if you're not on a Mac. Google's ecosystem is thinner on hardware (Pixel Watch and Pixel Buds exist but the lineup is smaller and less frequently updated) but wins on software openness - Pixel phones are the reference devices for Android developers and get new Android features and betas first. If you want a broad hardware ecosystem with matching watch, earbuds, and tablet options, Samsung's the bigger, more mature offering. If you'd rather have the cleanest, most current version of Android and don't care about a matching watch, Pixel is the simpler, less cluttered choice.

Same underlying model, different depth of integration

This is the one where the marketing claims genuinely need debunking. Both phones use Google's Gemini models - Samsung licenses and integrates Gemini into Galaxy AI, while Pixel gets Gemini natively and, in practice, gets new Gemini features first. Google's Pixel-exclusive features (Magic Cue's proactive suggestions, Add Me for group photos, Best Take, and the most capable on-device Gemini Nano for things like real-time call summaries) are consistently ahead of what shows up on Samsung a few months later. Samsung's Galaxy AI does layer on some of its own touches - Note Assist, Sketch to Image - but the core AI experience is genuinely a Google product wearing a Samsung skin. If AI capability specifically is your deciding factor, Pixel is the more honest choice, not because Samsung's version is bad, but because Pixel is running it first and with fewer restrictions.

Build quality, battery, and performance

Samsung's hardware still has an edge

Samsung's in-house display and battery manufacturing shows: the S26 Ultra's screen brightness in direct sunlight and its charging speed (45W wired) both beat the Pixel 10 Pro XL's roughly 30W charging and slightly dimmer peak brightness. Samsung's Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset (used in most global S26 units, including NZ stock) also benchmarks ahead of Google's own Tensor G5, which is tuned more for AI and camera processing than raw gaming or multitasking performance. If you're a heavy gamer or you push your phone hard on sustained tasks, Samsung's silicon is the safer pick. For everyday use - messaging, browsing, camera, calls - the Tensor G5's real-world performance is entirely adequate and you're unlikely to notice the gap.

Common misconceptions worth debunking

Worth knowing: Pixel phones in NZ are increasingly sold through parallel importers as well as Google's own store, so check warranty terms carefully - official NZ retailer stock carries local warranty support, grey imports don't always.

Our honest take: Pixel 10 is the better pure Android experience and the smarter buy if AI features and camera simplicity are your priority - and given it typically undercuts Samsung's equivalent tier on price, it's also the better value story. Samsung's Galaxy S26 earns its higher price with a broader ecosystem and stronger raw performance, which matters more if you're a gamer or already own Samsung accessories.
