Smart Blinds Explained

You don't need to replace your curtains to automate them. Here's the difference between retrofit motors and full replacement blinds, with real NZ pricing.

Retrofit: motorising what you already have

SwitchBot Curtain 3 is the best-known retrofit option — a small motor that clips onto an existing curtain rail and drives your curtains open and closed on a schedule or via app/voice. In NZ it's sold through Mighty Ape, with the rod version listed around NZ$179, plus SwitchBot's Hub 2 (roughly $69–90) if you want voice control or off-network scheduling. It needs a compatible rail (round or U-rail) and works with existing fabric curtains rather than roller blinds.

Aqara's Roller Shade Driver E1 takes a similar approach but for chain-driven roller blinds and vertical blinds — it clips onto the existing bead chain and turns it automatically, run through an Aqara hub, typically the Hub M2 (around NZ$84–120 depending on retailer/sale). This is generally cheaper than replacing blinds entirely if you already have a decent chain-driven blind.

Full replacement: IKEA Fyrtur and similar

IKEA's Fyrtur is a complete blackout roller blind with the motor built into the roller tube, sold in NZ through IKEA's own store and website. It requires IKEA's DIRIGERA hub (around NZ$100–130) to schedule and voice-control it, though it can run standalone with the included remote without a hub. Because it replaces the blind itself rather than motorising an old one, it's the tidier-looking option, but only makes sense if you're due to replace blinds anyway or want blackout specifically.

What actually matters when choosing

If you like your current curtains or blinds and just want them automated, retrofit (SwitchBot or Aqara) is cheaper and non-destructive. If you're renovating or replacing blinds anyway, and want blackout for a bedroom, Fyrtur-style replacement blinds are tidier. Check the rail/chain type before ordering — round rails, U-rails, and different bead-chain sizes are not universally compatible, and returns on made-to-measure blinds can be limited.

Battery life and maintenance

Both SwitchBot Curtain and Fyrtur use rechargeable built-in batteries rather than disposables — SwitchBot rates its Curtain 3 battery at around 8 months per charge under typical twice-daily use, and Fyrtur's battery is commonly reported to last 6 months or more between charges. Aqara's E1 driver runs on 4x AA batteries lasting roughly a year with normal use.
