Most "smart thermostat" guides are written for US central-heating systems that barely exist here. This is what actually works when your heating is a heat pump and a remote.

Why the US-style smart thermostat mostly doesn't apply

Products like Google Nest and Ecobee are built to replace a wall-mounted thermostat wired into a ducted furnace or central air conditioning system. Very few New Zealand homes have that setup. Statistics NZ and EECA data have long shown heat pumps as the dominant home heating method here, alongside wood burners and electric heaters. So the "smart thermostat" question for most Kiwi households is really "how do I make my heat pump smart," which is a different product category: IR-blaster controllers.

How Sensibo Sky and Sensibo Air work

Sensibo Sky and Sensibo Air are small pucks that sit in the same room as your heat pump, learn its infrared remote commands, and let you control temperature, mode and fan speed from an app, plus schedule it, use geofencing to turn it off when everyone leaves, and get alerts if a window's open while it's running. Sensibo claims compatibility with over 10,000 different air conditioner and heat pump remote codes, which covers the vast majority of Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Panasonic and Daikin units common in NZ homes. As of mid-2026, Sensibo Sky retails from around NZ$169 single unit, with a 2-pack listed around NZ$173–199 depending on retailer, sold through Sensibo's own NZ store, Noel Leeming and Dick Smith.

Sensibo Air is the lower-cost sibling with fewer sensors (no motion/light detection) and typically prices a little under Sky. Both plug into a wall socket near the unit — no electrician required, no changes to your heat pump itself.

What you actually get for the money

The main real-world benefit is scheduling and remote control: turning the heat pump on 20 minutes before you get home instead of leaving it running all day, or getting a push notification if it's been left on in an empty house. Sensibo's own energy reports estimate savings from smarter scheduling, though actual savings depend heavily on your household's existing habits — if you already turn the heat pump off when you leave, a smart controller mostly buys convenience, not extra savings.

Do any true smart thermostats exist here?

A handful of NZ homes do have hydronic (water-based) underfloor heating or ducted heat pump systems, where wall thermostats are genuinely used — usually tied to the brand's own controller (e.g. Daikin's Madoka or Mitsubishi Electric's kumo cloud) rather than a third-party Nest-style device. If you have one of these systems, check with your installer before buying anything generic, since compatibility is narrower than the heat-pump-remote category.

What to check before buying

• Confirm your heat pump brand is on the controller's supported list (Sensibo publishes one) — most major brands sold in NZ are covered.
• Check Wi-Fi reach to wherever the heat pump sits, as these are Wi-Fi devices, not Thread/Zigbee.
• If you want voice control, confirm Google Home/Alexa/HomeKit integration — Sensibo supports Google and Alexa; HomeKit needs Apple Home compatibility mode.
