Sonos vs Bose: Home Speakers NZ

Two of the biggest names in home audio take very different approaches โ€” one built around a tightly integrated multi-room ecosystem, the other around simplicity and value.

How we picked these: Comparison based on each brand's core smart speaker and soundbar lineup, priced against current Noel Leeming, JB Hi-Fi and Harvey Norman NZ listings.

Different philosophies

Sonos built its reputation on multi-room audio done properly โ€” buy one speaker, add more over time, and they all stay in sync through the Sonos app regardless of room. Bose takes a simpler approach: strong standalone products that don't require buying into a bigger system to sound good.

NZ pricing comparison

A single Sonos One-tier smart speaker runs around $349-$399 in NZ, while the flagship Sonos Era 300 sits near $799. Bose's comparable smart speaker, the Bose Home Speaker range, typically costs $429-$549. For soundbars, the Sonos Arc retails around $1,499 against the Bose Smart Soundbar's $799-$899 โ€” Bose is consistently the cheaper entry point across categories.

Sound signature

Ecosystem and multi-room

This is Sonos's clearest advantage โ€” its app treats every speaker in the house as part of one system, with seamless grouping, stereo pairing and surround setup for its soundbars. Bose's multi-room support has improved but still feels more like a bolt-on feature than the core design principle it is for Sonos.

Voice assistants and streaming

Both support major streaming services (Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music) and AirPlay 2. Sonos has leaned into its own voice control (Sonos Voice Control) alongside third-party assistant support, while Bose relies more heavily on the phone app for control on newer models.

Value for money

Bose consistently undercuts Sonos at every price tier for a comparable product category, which matters if budget is the main driver. Sonos asks a premium but delivers a noticeably more cohesive whole-home system if you're planning to buy more than one speaker over time.

Which to buy

Choose Sonos if you're building a multi-room system over time and want everything to stay in sync. Choose Bose if you want one great-sounding speaker or soundbar now, at a lower price, without committing to an ecosystem.
