Sony WF-1000XM6 Rumours: Everything We Know So Far
Most "rumour" posts are written before a product exists. This one's a little different โ Sony's WF-1000XM6 already shipped in February, but pricing and stock in New Zealand are still catching up, and plenty of buyers are still asking basic questions about what changed.
What's confirmed
Confirmed
Sony officially confirmed the WF-1000XM6 release date via a teaser video, with preorders opening 12 February 2026 and general availability from 23 February. Global pricing landed at US$330, ยฃ250 in the UK, โฌ299.99 in Europe (actually cheaper than the XM5's European launch price) and AU$500 in Australia.
Confirmed
Sony moved away from the rounded, spherical shape used on the XM4 and XM5 to a more oval, pill-shaped earbud, and added an extra microphone grille that points to improved noise cancellation and transparency mode performance.
What's reported (analyst / supply-chain sourced)
Reported โ TechRadar
TechRadar's pre-launch leak coverage pointed to Bluetooth 5.4 support arriving with newer features like LE Audio and Auracast, which would bring the XM6 in line with where Sony's headphone lineup is heading generally.
Reported โ Headphonesty
Headphonesty's release tracking suggests New Zealand pricing typically lands close to a straight AUD-to-NZD conversion for Sony audio gear, which would put the WF-1000XM6 somewhere in the mid-NZ$500 range once local retailers finalise RRP โ but Sony NZ hasn't published an official figure Twisti can point to yet.
Reported โ What Hi-Fi?
What Hi-Fi?'s hands-on review noted the XM6's all-round performance is strong enough to worry every major rival at the price, without singling out one weak spot โ a notably positive framing compared to how cautiously outlets usually treat a first review.
Twisti's opinion
Opinion
A cheaper European launch price than the outgoing model is a good sign for how this generation lands in NZ once local retailers settle on RRP. If you're not desperate to upgrade immediately, waiting for the first local sale cycle is probably the smarter move โ flagship Sony earbuds routinely drop $40-$60 within a few months of launch.
What we'll update
We'll update this page once major NZ retailers (JB Hi-Fi, Noel Leeming, PB Tech) list confirmed local RRP and stock dates, and again if Sony issues a firmware update that changes ANC or codec support.
