Every major NZ telco now dangles free or discounted Netflix, Neon or Disney+ with your plan. Whether that's an actual saving or a marketing trick depends on what you'd have paid anyway.

What Spark currently bundles

Spark has run various entertainment bundling structures — including a higher-tier Pay Monthly mobile plan (recently around $95/month) that includes Netflix Standard, several months of free Neon, and a Spotify Premium discount as part of the plan price. Spark has also offered standalone broadband + Netflix promotions where new broadband customers get a period of included Netflix. The exact inclusions and durations shift regularly, so the plan you see advertised now may differ from six months ago — always check the current terms and conditions page rather than a screenshot from a review site.

What 2degrees currently bundles

2degrees has offered six months of free Neon access as a mobile plan perk, plus additional monthly discounts (around $10/month in some offers) for existing 2degrees pay monthly mobile customers who add broadband or vice versa. Like Spark, these are promotional and time-limited rather than permanent plan features.

Doing the actual maths

Take a concrete example: if a $95/month mobile plan includes Netflix Standard (which alone costs roughly $17–23/month depending on tier) and you were already paying for Netflix separately, the bundle is worth roughly the plan price minus what you'd pay for an equivalent standalone mobile plan without Netflix — often landing at only a modest genuine saving once you compare like-for-like data allowances, not the full retail price of Netflix. If you weren't already paying for Netflix, you're not "saving" anything — you're being upsold to a plan tier you may not need.

The traps to watch for: bundled subscriptions almost always default back to full price after an introductory period (commonly 3–6 months), and cancelling the bundled streaming service separately from your telco plan doesn't always reduce your monthly telco bill — check whether the discount is tied to keeping the streaming service active.

When bundling genuinely makes sense

• You already pay for the exact streaming service being bundled, at the tier being offered.
• The combined bundle price (mobile/broadband + streaming) is lower than buying both separately at your existing tier — compare actual dollar figures, not the "free" framing.
• You're happy to actively cancel or downgrade once the promotional period ends, rather than let it roll onto full price by default.

When it doesn't

If bundling pushes you onto a higher mobile/broadband tier than you actually need for the data, or includes a streaming service you wouldn't otherwise pay for, you're very likely paying more overall for capacity and content you don't use.
