TP-Link in NZ: The Complete Buying Guide

TP-Link covers three very different jobs in New Zealand homes: whole-home WiFi (Deco), single routers (Archer), and budget smart home gear (Tapo). Here's what's actually worth buying and what it costs.

Why TP-Link is the default "good enough" brand

TP-Link isn't the most exciting networking or smart home brand in New Zealand, but it's the one that shows up cheapest and most consistently in stock at PB Tech, Noel Leeming, Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi and Mighty Ape. Its three sub-brands solve different problems: Deco is mesh WiFi for houses with dead zones, Archer is single-box routers for apartments and smaller homes, and Tapo is the budget smart home line — cameras, video doorbells, plugs and light bulbs that undercut Ring, Nest and Philips Hue by a wide margin.

Deco mesh WiFi systems

If you've got a two-storey house, a weird floor plan, or a garage/sleepout that never gets signal, mesh is the fix, and TP-Link's Deco range is the cheapest credible option in NZ. The Deco X50 (AX3000, WiFi 6) is the sweet spot for most households — sold as a 1-pack or 3-pack at Noel Leeming and PB Tech, with the 3-pack typically landing in the $400-$500 range depending on sales. The entry-level Deco X10/M4 models sit well under $300 for a 3-pack and suit smaller homes or apartments where you just want to kill one dead zone. If you're running gigabit fibre and want to actually use it, look at the WiFi 6E or WiFi 7 Deco models (BE series), which cost more but avoid bottlenecking a fast UFB connection.

Archer routers

For anyone who doesn't need mesh, the Archer range is a single router that plugs straight into your ONT or modem. These are common bundled-in options with some NZ fibre providers, and standalone Archer AX (WiFi 6) units are widely stocked at PB Tech and Noel Leeming. They're a sensible upgrade if your ISP-supplied router is a few years old and struggling with modern device counts — smart TVs, phones, laptops, cameras and smart plugs all fighting for the same channel.

Tapo smart home and cameras

Tapo is where TP-Link genuinely undercuts everyone. Indoor cameras like the Tapo C110 and C120 sit around $69-$99, and outdoor/weatherproof models like the C310 and C510W run roughly $55-$85, based on current NZ retailer listings. That's well below Ring or Nest equivalents. The Tapo D230S1 and D235 video doorbells (around $220-$290) are a genuine budget alternative to a Ring doorbell if you're happy running the free local storage option (microSD card in the hub) instead of paying a monthly cloud subscription — Tapo's optional cloud plans are cheaper than Ring's tiers too. Tapo also sells smart plugs, light strips and mini smart bulbs that work with the Tapo app, Alexa and Google Home, usually for a few dollars less than the equivalent Kasa or Meross product.

Where the retailers actually differ

PB Tech is usually the sharpest on price for routers and Deco kits and ships fast nationwide. Noel Leeming and Harvey Norman carry a narrower but more mainstream range (good for walking in and buying same-day) and run regular promotional pricing, especially around Black Friday and Boxing Day. For Tapo cameras and smart plugs specifically, dedicated NZ smart-home resellers like Smart Home Shop and SmartKiwis sometimes beat the big-box retailers on individual SKUs, so it's worth a quick compare before checking out.

Which TP-Link product should you actually buy

• Apartment or small house, one router is enough: an Archer AX WiFi 6 model.
• Budget home security cameras: Tapo C120 (indoor) or C310 (outdoor).

TP-Link's whole pitch in NZ is "most of the features, half the price" compared to Ring, Nest, Netgear or Eero. For most households that's a completely reasonable trade — just don't expect the polish or third-party integrations that pricier brands offer.
