Trade-in programmes in NZ: are they actually worth it?
Trading in your old phone or laptop towards a new one is fast and easy โ but easy isn't always the same as good value. Here's how to work out which is which.
How retailer trade-in schemes work
Most major NZ electronics retailers, along with Apple and some phone carriers, run trade-in programmes where you get an instant valuation for an eligible device and the value is deducted from your new purchase, or occasionally paid out as store credit or a gift card. The appeal is obvious: no listing photos, no dealing with strangers, no waiting for a buyer, and the transaction happens in the same visit as your new purchase.
Where trade-in value tends to fall short
The convenience comes at a cost. Trade-in valuations are typically set to leave the retailer margin for refurbishing and reselling the device, which generally means the amount offered sits below what you could get selling privately through a marketplace, especially for well-kept, popular models in high demand. The gap tends to be widest for higher-value devices like recent-generation phones and laptops, where private buyers are willing to pay closer to market rate.
Trade-in vs private sale
Trade-in wins on speed, certainty and zero effort โ you get a quoted price on the spot and it's immediately applied to your purchase, with no risk of a buyer messing you around. Private sale (via marketplace platforms) usually nets more money for devices in good condition, particularly newer or higher-demand models, but takes longer, involves more effort (photos, listing, meeting buyers or shipping), and carries some risk of a difficult buyer or payment issue. If your device is older, has cosmetic damage, or you value your time highly, trade-in often makes more sense despite the lower payout.
When trade-in makes more sense
- Your device is old enough, or in poor enough condition, that private sale demand and price would be low anyway.
- You want to walk out of the store with your new purchase today and don't want the hassle of managing a private sale alongside it.
- The retailer is running a promotional trade-in bonus (temporarily boosted valuations) that closes or narrows the usual gap to private sale value.
Getting the most from a trade-in
Always get quotes from more than one retailer or trade-in service before accepting the first offer โ valuations for the same device can vary meaningfully between providers. Also factor in condition honestly: valuations are usually provisional until the device is physically inspected, and a lower final offer after inspection is common if the device has damage not disclosed upfront.
