Ubiquiti's UniFi gear has quietly become the favourite of NZ home networking nerds and small businesses alike — but the sheer number of model names can be paralysing.

Why Kiwis are switching to Ubiquiti

Most Kiwi households outgrow their ISP-supplied router within a year or two — especially once you add a mesh of smart plugs, a couple of 4K streaming boxes, and someone gaming on a wired connection. Ubiquiti's UniFi ecosystem sits in an unusual sweet spot: it has the depth of enterprise networking gear but a app-based interface calm enough for a normal household to manage. In NZ, it's sold mainly through PB Tech, with smaller allocations turning up at Mighty Ape and direct via Ubiquiti's own regional store with freight to NZ.

UniFi Express — the simple all-in-one

For a household that just wants one box that does router, Wi-Fi 6, and basic UniFi app control, the UniFi Express (around $219 NZD at PB Tech) is the easiest entry point. It's compact, fanless, and doesn't need a separate UniFi Cloud Key or server — it hosts its own controller. This is the one to buy if you've never touched UniFi before and just want a noticeably faster, more reliable home network than your ISP modem.

Dream Machine SE and Pro — for the serious home network

Once you start adding UniFi Protect cameras, VLANs for guest Wi-Fi, or a home server, the UniFi Dream Machine SE (around $799 NZD) becomes worth it. It bundles routing, an 8-port PoE switch, and a Protect NVR with a couple of terabytes of storage into one unit. The step-up Dream Machine Pro Max (from roughly $1,099 NZD) suits larger properties running ten or more cameras and multiple access points, thanks to its extra bays and higher PoE budget.

Access points: U6 series vs U7

If your router already does Wi-Fi fine but you need better coverage upstairs or in a sleepout, a dedicated access point beats a mesh extender. The U6+ (around $219 NZD) covers most two-storey homes for the money. Budget-conscious buyers who don't need Wi-Fi 6E or 7 can also still find the older U6 Lite discounted at Mighty Ape for under $180 NZD. For new builds or anyone future-proofing, the U7 Pro (about $329 NZD) adds Wi-Fi 7 support, worthwhile if your phone or laptop is recent enough to benefit.

UniFi Protect cameras

Ubiquiti's camera range (G4 and newer AI series) integrates directly with a Dream Machine, avoiding subscription fees that plague Ring or Nest. The G4 Bullet (around $219 NZD) is the most common starter camera for a driveway or front door, while the AI Pro (about $449 NZD) adds on-device smart detection for packages and vehicles. Note that cameras need a Dream Machine or Cloud Key to record to — they don't work standalone like a Eufy or Ring camera.

Switches: do you actually need one?

If you're only running a router and one or two access points, you don't need a separate switch. But once you're wiring in cameras, a NAS, and a desktop PC, the UniFi Flex Mini (around $59 NZD for a 5-port) or the PoE Flex 2.5G (around $139 NZD) fills the gap without needing rack space.

What to skip

Unless you're running a business with dozens of devices, skip the rack-mount switches and the UniFi Cloud Gateway Fiber — both are overkill and considerably pricier for features a household will never touch. Similarly, the UniFi Talk phone system and Access door-entry gear are aimed squarely at commercial fit-outs, not homes.

Where to buy in NZ

PB Tech carries the widest and most consistently stocked UniFi range in the country and tends to price-match its own online listings in-store. Mighty Ape occasionally undercuts on older-generation stock being cleared out. Harvey Norman and Noel Leeming stock a very limited UniFi selection, usually just the Express and a Dream Router, so for anything beyond the basics you'll be shopping PB Tech or ordering direct.
