The Ultimate USB-C Buying Guide

Two USB-C cables can look identical and perform completely differently. The connector shape tells you almost nothing about what's actually inside.

The one thing to understand

USB-C describes the physical connector shape โ€” it says nothing on its own about charging speed, data transfer speed, or video support. A cheap USB-C cable and an expensive one can plug into exactly the same port while performing very differently underneath.

What actually varies

Regulatory context: the EU and several other regions have mandated USB-C charging ports on new phones and small electronics, which is why USB-C has become nearly universal โ€” but that mandate is about the connector, not a guaranteed speed or power spec.

Buying tips

Match the cable to the job: a basic charging cable for a phone doesn't need Thunderbolt speeds, but an external SSD absolutely does. For laptops that charge over USB-C, check the laptop's required wattage and buy a charger and cable rated at or above it โ€” undercharging can mean the battery slowly drains even while "charging" under heavy use.
