VPNs get talked about as a cure-all for online privacy and shopping deals, but the reality is more limited. Here is a plain explanation of what a VPN does, and where the claims tend to overreach.

What a VPN actually does

A VPN, short for Virtual Private Network, routes your internet traffic through an encrypted tunnel to a server operated by the VPN provider, rather than sending it directly from your device to the websites you visit. This hides your traffic from your internet service provider and from networks you are connected to, such as public Wi-Fi, and it makes your connection appear to originate from the VPN server's location rather than your own.

Where a VPN is genuinely useful

Public Wi-Fi security — encrypting your traffic on an unsecured cafe or airport network reduces the risk of someone else on that network snooping on unencrypted data.
Accessing region-locked content — some streaming or web content is restricted by country, and a VPN can make your connection appear to be from a different region, though this may breach some services' terms of use.
General browsing privacy — it prevents your ISP from seeing which specific sites you visit, though it does not make you anonymous on the internet as a whole.

Does a VPN get you cheaper prices when shopping?

This is one of the most persistent VPN myths. Some travel and subscription services do vary pricing by region, but most electronics retailers in New Zealand, including the major ones tracked on Twisti, price based on the store itself rather than your apparent location. Using a VPN is unlikely to unlock a meaningfully cheaper price at a local NZ retailer, and in some cases can actually cause problems if a site flags the unusual location and blocks or delays your order.

What a VPN does not do

A VPN does not make you invisible online. Websites you log into can still identify you through your account, and a VPN provider itself can typically see your traffic, which is why the provider's own privacy practices and logging policy matter. It also will not protect you from phishing, malware, or scams — those risks exist regardless of whether a VPN is active.

Note: If you do use a VPN, choosing a reputable, well-reviewed provider matters more than the marketing claims on the sign-up page. Free VPN services in particular are worth researching carefully, since some monetise by logging and selling user data — the opposite of what most people want from a privacy tool.

Should the average shopper bother with one?

For most everyday online shopping in New Zealand, a VPN is not necessary and will not change the prices you see. It is more relevant if you frequently use public Wi-Fi, want extra privacy from your ISP, or need to access specific region-locked content — in which case it is a reasonable tool, just not a shopping hack.
