Wi-Fi 6 vs Wi-Fi 7: Is Upgrading Actually Worth It
Wi-Fi 7 is faster and lower-latency on paper, but almost none of it shows up unless your devices support it too - here's the honest, numbers-first breakdown.
What actually changed between the two generations
We've already covered what Wi-Fi 7 brings to the table in our Wi-Fi 7 explainer - this post is specifically about the jump from Wi-Fi 6/6E to Wi-Fi 7, and whether it's worth paying the premium to upgrade now rather than later. Short version: the improvements are real and measurable, but almost none of them show up unless your phone, laptop or console also supports Wi-Fi 7 - and most devices still don't in mid-2026.
Wi-Fi 6 / 6E
- Up to 160MHz channel width, OFDMA for better multi-device efficiency, theoretical max around 9.6Gbps (rarely hit in practice)
- Real-world throughput on a busy home network: roughly 2-3Gbps on a strong connection
- Combined wireless + network latency typically 25-35ms under normal load
- 6E added the 6GHz band for less-congested spectrum, but device support for 6GHz is still patchy
- Mature, cheap, and every current phone/laptop supports at least Wi-Fi 6
Wi-Fi 7
- 320MHz channels on 6GHz, higher-order 4K-QAM modulation, theoretical max around 46Gbps (again, a lab number, not a real one)
- Real-world throughput on multi-gig internet: roughly 4-5Gbps - about 30-50% faster than Wi-Fi 6 in congested, device-heavy homes
- Multi-Link Operation (MLO): the standout new feature - a device can use multiple bands simultaneously instead of switching between them, which is what actually drives the latency win
- Latency drops to roughly 15-22ms typically, and 99th-percentile latency spikes shrink from ~45ms down to ~12ms with MLO active - this is the number that matters for gaming and video calls
- Requires a Wi-Fi 7 router AND a Wi-Fi 7 client device on both ends to get any of the above - a Wi-Fi 7 router talking to a Wi-Fi 6 phone just runs at Wi-Fi 6 speeds
Do the numbers actually matter for you?
If your internet plan is under a gigabit - which covers most NZ fibre plans outside the top-tier UFB options - Wi-Fi 6/6E was never your bottleneck, and Wi-Fi 7 won't change your day-to-day browsing, streaming or video call experience at all. The generational jump is genuinely about two things: households with multi-gig fibre trying to actually use that bandwidth wirelessly, and latency-sensitive use cases like competitive online gaming or wireless VR, where MLO's steadier, lower-spike latency is a real, felt improvement rather than a spec-sheet number.
Device support in mid-2026 - the honest state of play
Wi-Fi 7 client support has grown a lot since 2024, but it's still far from universal. Flagship phones from the last two years (recent iPhones, Samsung Galaxy S25/S26-class, Pixel 9/10) mostly support it, and higher-end 2025-2026 laptops are increasingly shipping with Wi-Fi 7 chips. But mid-range and budget phones, most older laptops, smart TVs, streaming boxes, and the vast majority of smart home gear (plugs, cameras, sensors) are still Wi-Fi 5 or 6. A Wi-Fi 7 router in a typical NZ household today is mostly serving Wi-Fi 6/6E speeds to most of its connected devices, with maybe one or two devices actually taking advantage of the new standard.
Cost difference in NZ right now
A solid Wi-Fi 6E mesh or router system typically runs $300-600 NZD depending on coverage needs. Wi-Fi 7 routers and mesh systems currently sit at a premium - roughly $500-1,200+ NZD for a comparable setup - though that gap has been narrowing steadily as more Wi-Fi 7 chipsets ship at volume. That premium is the real question: is it worth $200-600 extra today for a feature set most of your devices can't use yet?
Should you upgrade now, or wait?
- Upgrade to Wi-Fi 7 now if: you're on a gigabit+ fibre plan, you own two or more Wi-Fi 7 capable devices already, you live in a large or device-dense household, or you're a serious online gamer who wants the lowest possible latency spikes.
- Stick with Wi-Fi 6/6E if: your current router works fine, your internet plan is sub-gigabit, and most of your devices are more than 18 months old. You genuinely won't notice the difference day-to-day.
- Buy Wi-Fi 7 anyway if: you're replacing a router that's dying regardless and don't want to do this again in two years - future-proofing is a reasonable argument even without the immediate benefit, as long as the price premium doesn't bother you.
The verdict
For the large majority of NZ households in 2026, a good Wi-Fi 6E router or mesh system remains the smarter buy - it costs less, and your actual devices won't be leaving meaningful performance on the table. Wi-Fi 7 is a genuine, measurable step up in throughput and especially latency, but it needs matching client hardware to show it, and that hardware is still a minority of what's in most homes.
The exception: if you've already got multi-gig fibre and at least a couple of newer Wi-Fi 7 devices, or gaming latency is something you actively care about and will pay for, go ahead and upgrade now - you'll feel the difference immediately on those devices, and the rest of the house will simply run at Wi-Fi 6E speeds until it catches up.
