Smart Sensors Explained
Sensors are the quiet workhorses of a smart home โ cheap, unglamorous, and often the thing that actually makes automations and security useful, rather than the bulbs and cameras that get all the attention.
The four sensors that matter most
- Motion sensors: detect movement in a room or area using passive infrared (PIR), the same tech in old-school alarm systems. Used to trigger lights automatically, feed security automations, or alert you to movement in a room while you're away.
- Door/window sensors: a small two-part magnetic switch โ one part on the door or window, one on the frame โ that reports open or closed. The backbone of DIY smart security and also handy for non-security automations, like turning off the heat pump when a door's left open.
- Water leak sensors: small pucks placed on the floor near a hot water cylinder, washing machine, dishwasher or under a sink, that detect moisture and send an immediate alert โ often before a slow leak becomes an expensive one.
- Temperature (and humidity) sensors: monitor a room's conditions, useful for automating heating/cooling, tracking whether a hot water cylinder cupboard is getting damp, or just keeping an eye on a nursery or a wine fridge.
What sensors actually enable
On their own, a sensor just reports a state โ motion detected, door open, water present, 18 degrees. The value comes from what you connect it to: an automation ("turn on the hallway light when motion is detected after dark"), a security alert ("notify me if the back door opens after 11pm"), or a genuinely protective trigger ("alert me immediately if moisture is detected near the hot water cylinder"). Sensors are the input layer of a smart home โ cameras and voice assistants get the attention, but sensors are often doing more of the actual automation work behind the scenes.
The insurance angle
Water damage is one of the most common and expensive home insurance claims in New Zealand, and a leak caught early by a $30-50 sensor can be the difference between a quick mop-up and a burst-pipe claim running into tens of thousands of dollars for flooring, walls and possibly mould remediation. While most NZ insurers don't currently offer direct premium discounts for leak sensors the way some overseas insurers do, preventing the damage in the first place is the real financial upside โ placing sensors near cylinders, dishwashers, washing machines and under sinks is one of the cheapest, highest-value smart home purchases you can make, sensor-hype aside.
Zigbee vs Wi-Fi for sensors โ battery life is the whole story
This is where the underlying wireless protocol matters more for sensors than for almost any other device category, because sensors are almost always battery-powered and you want to touch them as rarely as possible.
- Zigbee sensors: typically last 1-2+ years on a small coin-cell battery, because Zigbee radios sip power and only transmit briefly when a state actually changes. Require a Zigbee hub (see our Zigbee explainer), but that hub usually also runs your bulbs and plugs, so it's rarely a sensor-specific cost.
- Wi-Fi sensors: no hub needed, simpler initial setup, but the Wi-Fi radio's constant higher power draw means noticeably shorter battery life โ often a matter of months rather than years โ and more frequent battery swaps become a genuine chore once you have a dozen sensors around the house.
For a one-off single sensor, Wi-Fi's no-hub simplicity might win. For a house with six, eight, ten sensors covering doors, windows and leak points, Zigbee's battery life advantage compounds quickly โ swapping batteries in ten Wi-Fi sensors every few months gets old fast.
Do you actually need sensors?
Not every room needs one. The highest-value placements are genuinely practical: a leak sensor near the hot water cylinder and under the kitchen sink, a door sensor on external entry points if you want basic DIY security without a full monitored alarm, and a motion sensor in an entryway to trigger lighting automatically. Beyond that, sensors on every internal door or in every room quickly become more setup and battery maintenance than value delivered โ start with the two or three placements that solve an actual problem you have, rather than sensor-ing the whole house at once.

- Biggest bang for buck: a water leak sensor near your hot water cylinder.
- Best security basic: door/window sensors on external entry points.
- Most satisfying automation: a motion sensor triggering entryway or hallway lighting.
- Planning more than a couple: go Zigbee and budget for one hub rather than mixing Wi-Fi sensors.
