Zigbee Explained

You'll see Zigbee mentioned on the box of half the smart bulbs and sensors in JB Hi-Fi, usually with no explanation of what it actually means. Here's the plain-English version, and why it needs a hub to do anything.

What Zigbee is

Zigbee is a low-power wireless networking protocol, purpose-built for small, battery-powered smart home devices โ€” bulbs, sensors, plugs, switches โ€” to talk to each other and to a central hub. It's not a brand, and it's not the same thing as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, even though all three are radio protocols living in similar frequency bands. It was designed from the ground up around one priority: sipping as little power as possible so battery-powered sensors can last months or years on a coin cell, rather than needing frequent recharging like a Wi-Fi device would.

How it differs from Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Why it needs a hub

Zigbee devices don't speak directly to your phone or home Wi-Fi network โ€” they speak Zigbee to each other and to a hub (also called a bridge or coordinator), which translates that traffic into something your app, or a platform like Home Assistant, can understand and control over your regular Wi-Fi or the internet. This is the single most common point of confusion for first-time buyers: a Zigbee bulb or sensor bought in isolation, with no hub, will not connect to your phone app at all โ€” it's simply a "no signal" device until paired with a compatible bridge.

The gotcha: Zigbee is not standalone. Whatever ecosystem you buy into โ€” Philips Hue, IKEA Tradfri, Aqara, or a generic Zigbee hub used with Home Assistant โ€” you need that one hub before any Zigbee device does anything beyond sit on a shelf. The good news: one hub typically supports many dozens of devices, so it's a single upfront cost rather than a per-device one, and hubs from different Zigbee brands can sometimes even be combined under a platform like Home Assistant.

Why manufacturers still use it for battery devices

For anything that needs to run for months or years on a small battery โ€” door/window sensors, motion sensors, battery-powered switches โ€” Zigbee's low power draw is a genuine, measurable advantage over Wi-Fi. A Zigbee door sensor might last well over a year on a coin cell; the same sensor built on Wi-Fi would likely need recharging every few weeks. That's why you'll see Wi-Fi used for mains-powered gear like bulbs and plugs (where power isn't a constraint) far more often than for small battery sensors.

Zigbee and Matter

Matter, the newer cross-platform standard, was originally built primarily around Wi-Fi and Thread rather than Zigbee directly. Rather than Zigbee disappearing, though, the practical trend has been Zigbee devices bridging into Matter โ€” a Zigbee hub (like a newer Hue Bridge) exposes its connected Zigbee devices to Matter-compatible apps, effectively giving Zigbee gear cross-ecosystem compatibility without the devices themselves needing to change protocol. Should it affect what you buy?

If you're buying a handful of mains-powered bulbs or plugs and don't plan to expand much, a simple Wi-Fi device with no hub is genuinely less hassle.
